Vedder: bait casting rod : 12' vs 14'
« on: December 14, 2013, 11:14:49 PM »

Hi All,

I am looking into buying a casting rod and considering 12 or 14 feet rods. Would you suggest 14' is a big overkill?

For drift fishing, I use a 10'6" rod. Don't think you would need a 12 or 14 foot rod.

Why you want to use  14 ft rod ?   10 1/2 ft is good enough.

I have a 10"6" and a lighter 9'6" and find that I use the shorter rod almost all the time when I float fish now.

I have a 13FT Spey rod, I take my sea-run center-pin, and also my spey reel, so I can enjoy both if I please. casting the 13ft rod takes a bit of getting used to, but once there a longer rod( on a bigger system) can be beneficial ...cheers

I have rods in all different lengths and personally my favorite rod for the vedder is a 13' rainshadow.i fell in love with longer rods when i had my first 12'4120 sage trigger rod made for the T.loved it so much i was using it on the vedder almost always. And so were my buddys i fished with..that rod was a bit heavy for the vedder but such a pleasure to use.i dont think i wld use anything over 13' on the vedder though.as the can be a bit of a pain sometimes.

10-11' is the perfect baitcasting rod size for the Vedder.
12'+ is more suited to big rivers such as the Fraser, Thompson or Skeena.

Like a few members already suggested, go with the standard 10'6" to 11' medium action rod. It will cover all your baitcasting needs.

Agree that 10"6 is a pretty solid length for the Vedder. I used to alway use my 11"6 but found it a bit heavy/tiring to fish all day. The 10"6 is a bit lighter and balances better on most of my reels.

I had a Rainshadow 13 foot built, at Valley Custom rods; Mark did a really nice job on it. The Rod is a power 2, light action. Is yours light or medium action?
I have several rods as well. I use two rod on the boat on the Fraser, you would have a hard time breaking them if you tried. I have played 28 pound springs, with them, and didn’t care if I broke, one.  The rod are Fenwick HMX 10.5 foot.

Its a new blank 1352 4 Piece. Yes its a light rod but has amazing backbone. I use it on my center pin though as i like a more noodlier rod for pinning than i do for baitcasting.

What action do you guys like your rod? Would medium heavy work okay for rivers like the vedder?

I'm looking into something in the 12-13 ft range but it seems like these are all custom. How does one go purchasing these and if so what is the typical cost for a quality but not necessarily the crown jewel rod?
