Title: What's with the run(s) this year ?
Post by: Spudcote on June 27, 2005, 06:08:39 PM
Is it just me, or is no one really hitting salmon consistently ?

It seems to be the same all over at the moment, in the local chuck, in the distant chuck, and the "early" rivers aren't really producing anything right now.

Should we be worried ? Or is this just a one off ?  :-\

I'm heading out tomorrow onto the local chuck, hopfully the results may change my point of view. I just finished school (for good, until UVic), and want to fish, but there don't seem to be many around.  :(

I am 0 for 6 in my barfishing so far this year. Had about 3 hits in total. Sunday I spent 10 hours and got one hit. Their were 4 of us on Sunday and I had the only hit in those 10 hours. Yes its pretty slow. Test nets are also way down.

As yoiu know the main stem bar fishing has been poor because of the dirty and high water conditions.

As well the high water and a lot of sticks in the river affect the test fishery at Albion and the FN nets.

Also keep in mind the Test Fishery at Albion lose a lot of their fish due to seal predation. The seals just hang there waiting for the nets to drop.

Also the FN set netters have to sit on their nets as the seals are right on the fish when they are in the net

Seriously though, hasn't the seal population got to a size that it's possible to do some "selective harvesting," as in, 1 per year per hunter. There has to be some nutritional value in one of those things.

Don't think that it will happen anytime soon. Imagine the kerfuffle that groups such as PETA, Greenpeace and the Sea Shepherd Society will stir up ?

This reminds me of a time when a couple guys at belcarra would cast out a salmon head and play tug o war with a seal.  It was quite funny watching these two guys trying to bring in that thing.

reports from rivers inlet, nootka, bamfield and the charlottes have been killer for springs to 40 lbs. coho are showing up a month and a half early in nootka and in rivers, averaging 10 to 15 lbs. these fish are gonna be monsters come fall  ;) . Anyhow that's fresh off the press from groups i have talked to that have been returning from destination lodges and the usual west coast hot spots.
Locally i haven't heard much. talked to a few guys who have hit the odd cap sized coho around dundarave, but nothing to right home about. I also have had 2 reports from the delta port terminal area of springs in the mid 20's in the past 5 days, but no one believes me when i voice those reports  ;D , it's like it's area 51 or something hehehe. one was cutplugged on a medium herring at about 30 ft even.
the only other report i've had in past 5 days was a couple guys from poiler doing o.k. but not great.

You made my day too. I head North tomorrow.

From what I've heard it's really startng to take off. I'm feeling a lot more optomistic now. Got reports of the 50 lb fish starting to really show up, but there's nothing wrong with the 40 lb fish they were getting before eh ?  :D ;)

Looking forward to going up, got some new gear to try out.

Marco, if you read this, try to get hold of me sometime during the season. I hear you guys have been fihsing "our turf" recently ?  :P

Hey Allwaysfishin...

you mentioned the Detla Port Terminal.
I'd love to try fishing that area, but I'm not quite sure exactly where to go.

I know how to set up a herring so it spins and i can troll in my 12' aluminum.

But I don't really know where to go to get the fish.  Do I need to go far out?
Is there any specific locations in that area I should be trolling around in?  Or just in that whole general area?

I was crabbing with a buddy there last weekend and it was a blast (first time crabbing, believe it or not!).
I tried trolling a bit, but I wasn't sure how far I needed to go out.

Any suggestions anyone?

most of the local waters guys are fishing over 60 to 250 feet of water in depth. not always the case but often. lures and bait are being trolled anywhere from 30 ft to 200 ft deep. if you have no downrigger gettign the lines down much past 60 ft is tough. I personally wouldn't go out there trolling in a 12ft boat. zippin out to get crab pots is one thing but once your are out far enough to troll for salmon, i wouldn't be caught dead in a 12 ft. just my opinion though.
