Well Peg Leg Bar is now 770 Kg lighter thanks to 30 volunteers from the Chilliwack Fish Game & Protective, the 3 local fishing forums that were all represeted as well as some citzens who also were concerned with the mess left by so many uncaring individuals.

I arrived at 9:50 and a number of the volunteers already had bags full including Leadbelly who had a full pile he had collected since last night and this morning while he was bar fishing with Nuggy who was working the area around his bar rod as well. There was so much line one could spend ones time just picking it up within a close enough distance to run for ones pole when the bell tolled.

Fisherforever, dennyman, Buckeye, speycaster,taffydoll, messman along with some other I may have missed spend two to 3 hours picking up enough line to span across half of British Columbia.

We were also disturbed by seeing so many people not heeding FOC request to fish selectively as many many sockeye were landed and unfortunately too many were not handled very well at all.Some were dragged up on the beach a few feet covered with sand, they were reprimanded by some of their fellow bb ers. I would not be surprised if FOC does not close the river to salmon fishing if so many continue to fish this way now.

I saw only two springs in the time I was there including one jack spring taken by a bar fisher.

All in all it was an excellent morning, too bad more users of the resource could not show up but I know some have done their own cleanups when they have been out during the sockeye opening thanks to them as well.

Special thanks goes to Sandy Ritchie the pres of CHWK Fish Game Protective Association for supplying his big trailer to hall the stuff away. Sandy also got us free tipping charges from the City of Chilliwack along with a box of garbage bags from them as well.

We ended the day with a few of us dinning at Cookies, where else before Buckeye, Sandy and myself took the trailer up to the Bailey Landfill to separate the garbage into the bins.

Once again thanks to all who gave up part of their weekend to attend including the several youngsters that also pitched in the best they could. You guys are our remaining hope, the hope being your generation will do a better job of looking after our precious rivers than sadly we before you have. After seeing what we saw today is an embarrassment not only too me but to all that took part.

Also those from this forum please give a report on how you saw the cleanup and any suggestions we may need in the future to prevent this ongoing problem.

I will post later more details of another cleanup planned for tomorrow for those that wanted to take part on Sunday. Please check back later.

That was just one day FA!!  I am sure we will get somewhere around that tomorrow as well.  Yes, really sad.  But not all are like that, there is hope.  Last weekend I was at the Vedder and there was a group of campers there, young people.  I thought that there was going to be a huge mess to clean up after that.  But to my pleasure and surprise, the really did a great job of cleaning up after themselves and left it cleaner then it was when they had gotten there.   So there is some hope for some of our young friends. 
 I hope that this situation does get better.

It will get worse before it gets better. Every year we see more and more people flossing for sockeye which results in more garbage. The more people their are the more garbage is going to be left behind. Its sad but its the truth. Thankfully we have people that are willing to put in the time and energy to make a difference. Just imagine if nobody cared enough to go about and make the effort. Just imagine if their was no internet. If it was not for sites like Rods where would we be? Their would be no way to get enough people aware of the situation to make the difference needed.

good job you guys. its people like you that make the rivers a better place to fish. pls post if you are planning another cleanup for sunday at peg-leg. if the backs not too sore i would want to be part of the cleanup

Helped out this morning at the Peg Leg cleanup, and it was nice to meet some the members from this site, and the other volunteers from the other groups. Going to give some of those spinners I bought from Fisherforever a try on the Vedder in the next couple of weeks, as they look real nice and sharp. But anyhow back to the cleanup. As Chris mentioned earlier, it was disappointing to see the amount of garbage that had been left behind after the Sockeye season. I know I must have picked up three to four big bags of garbage. The garbage ranged from sandals, Timmies cups, Slurpie containers, fishing line, hooks,  hook wrappers , food, you name it ....it was there.  In addition, I picked up a number of pieces of metal ranging from car parts, to  tent poles, to old metal shelves.  The one that took the cake was an old discarded sofa bed frame that must have been in the river for a few years as it was just draped with fishing line and must have been a snag haven for unsuspecting fisherman. With the help, of another fellow we were able to use his truck to pull it out with a chain and then take it back to the trailer for disposal.  But come on a sofa bed!!!  One can only hope that through cleanup efforts such as this that the message starts getting through - " Pick up After Yourself Don't Be a Slob".

well, without posting a hundred pics just imagine this over and over and over and over

so i managed to do my bit anyway
frankly Im astounded at how shabby people can treat the river and the outdoors, and how few people came to help out.
Also did a clean up at Herrling today, and found some people fishing, people with fresh filleted bones in front of their trucks.Found the cops just down the road and gave em a report for what its worth.

Unbelievalble how many tim hortons cups there are!  Good job on the cleanup folks, maybe send a copy of that pic to a tim hortons rep?

It was nice to put some faces with some names but I was truly disgusted by the amount of trash that was there. Me and my son where not cleaning up directly on the river bank because I was worried that he might get hooked by some of the people still bbing so we were about 30 - 40 yards from the bank and still managed to get a few bags full.  Was really nice to see so many people out to clean up the bar   I think there is still another couple of thousand pounds of trash there on the entire bar, so sad .  Was so proud of my 3 year son for picking up trash for entire 1 hour and half with out once complaining we went out for ice cream after.
If there are anymore days plan for a clean please let us know and me and JR will be there.
