Title: SNOW = $$$$
Post by: arimaBOATER on February 07, 2017, 08:42:54 PM
Definately a winter that had & will have major snowfalls. ( needed it in 2010 ) Big plus is the good snowpacks. Melting snow to keep our streams & rivers higher during Spring / Summer months.
For so many this snow is big $$$ in their pockets.
Towing companies = $$$
Auto Body Shops = $$$
Snow removal business = $$$
Taxi more busy = $$$
Salt snow shovels gloves selling = $$$
People slipping & hurting themselves = $$$ ( doctors )
Snow tires = $$$
Must be more people making bucks because of the snow but no more thoughts come to mind.
Oh snow means it's cold weather thus more electricity / natural gas used.
Lots of guys are making big bucks & they are hoping it will continue to snow & snow. & more snow.
Oh ya skiing in the mountains. Grouse Mt etc..

Yep this is when one really appreciates having a 4 wheel drive & good tires.
On our street the snow was quite high the other day & frosty / crunchy  / solid stuff. ( not power or slushy ) stuck our vehicle on LOCK mode & backed into the driveway & it spun at one point but within seconds had it parked. Now if it was the car NO WAY.
Be careful walking in this stuff.
Never slipped all winter till the other day. Snow was shiny & packed hard because of tires & as I proceeded to walk on it suddenly in a "snap of your finger" my foot shot out from beneath me.
Arms went up in the air but somehow did not fall.
Walked even extra careful after that. Had on good winter walking boots with good grips too.

Isnt this is the broken window fallacy. For the rest of society, the loss of productivity and negative impact outweighs any benefit to the few.

Very true.
Your point is logical as the excess snow really is a negative to our area $$$ wise. Also schools have closed in some areas in the LML.
With all the extra claims our ICBC rates are going to climb even more.
Rates are going higher because of the high payouts in auto injuries.
Buses stuck or very late. Bridge cables having icing problems. A Shaw worker said the snow also can affect tv signals. He was inspecting some cables/wiring in our area.
Nevertheless the snow has given some a major $$$ bonanza. For these few they are making the dough.

People who like jogging or biking on a daily basis are hoping for some warn rainy weather.
About 10 years ago we had lots of snow & it stayed cold thus the sidewalks were very hard to use for at least 1.5 months here in Richmond. Old people stayed inside fearing they would slip & fall.
Sidewalks had  8 inches of hard packed snow. Crazy.
Those with steep driveways or who live in hilly areas hate this weather 10x more.
Also many taxi cabs have propane fuel problems when it's cold.
When Spring type weather comes we will appreciate it just that much more.

Yep, I am paid by the load. Usually get 3-4 in a day depending on waits. Snow and I'm lucky to get 2.
Daycare is closed last 2 days so my wife can't go to work.
I see a select few making money while the rest of the population suffers.

A typical Broken window economy. Not very productive. The money to buy a rod has to buy bags of salt.

Don't forget the destruction done to the roads themselves from the temperature changes, snow tires, and plows.  We all pay for that.    Let's just hope the thaw is a slow one so we don't get massive flooding as well - that could destroy millions of eyed eggs and alevin in the gravel.

Noon tv news had story on a senior who uses a walker who stated she has not left her home since the snowfalls. News also stated so many calls to 911 as injuries caused by falls. Broken hips, etc..
Also story of roofing companies getting business as they shovel off snow build up off flat roofs.
Tomorrow it will be rain or freezing rain. Power lines will get heavy if it's freezing rain.
Earlier there was a story of a building in Queens Park New Westminster that had it's roof cave in because of the weight. Arenex building I think it was.
If that's the building it brings back memories as in the 1960's -70s they had a lot of pro wrestling events.
Rocky Johnson father of The Rock, Tolos Brothers,Gene Kiniski,Don Leo Jonathan, The Assassins, on & on wrestled there. These guys could sell out Madison Square Gardens when in their prime.
Fortunately no one was in the building at the time of the cave in.
Right now the snow is falling in Richmond. 2:15 pm Weds. Boo !
Bring on the rain & more moderate temps.

I'll give you an idea of how money is not spend well , city of course .
I do snow removal for one of the districts, I'm not going into detail of course.
Work was split up, half , half between city workers and contractors.
Same amount of people , same amount of equipment .
Over a period of 4 days contractors went over their routes three times.
City completed 1/3 of one route over the same period of time .
Same wages I should mention.

Money being wasted by some districts , just makes you puke.

You "ALL " made lots of interesting pts /  & food for thought.
Good insights.
Temp. in Richmond is below freezing at the moment.
According to weather people it will soon be above freezing in the Vancouver area & by am 8-10 am in the valley also above freezing plus rain so in a few days 90% or more of the snow should be gone.
YAHOO !

Cold rain won't do anything to the snow besides saturate it. It's been pouring rain in Nanaimo since midnight, but at only 1C, there is still snow even on the highway. It hasn't melted anything on the grass, etc. I bet the snow will stick around for a little while still...

In Richmond this afternoon the melting is in full force. Even some sunshine & temp. is 41 F. ( what is that in C maybe 11 ? . My home temp. weather station is set in F.  )
Steady stream of water flowing at the corner of the roof. Big drips of water coming off the evergreen branches. We have a rather med /big sized 70 ft evergreen tree in the front yard.
In Pt Coq yesterday the wkrs thought ahead & cleaned around the street drains.
Also heard a car spun out & a passenger got killed.  As the police have said "slow down please in these conditions".

The spun out car was a few blocks from my house, I was leaving for work 3am and 200 st was closed between 80 th and 72nd in Langley .
Aperantly there was alcohol involved in this accident and very possible the driver will be charged.

Alcohol plus snowy slippery driving conditions. Wow. The driver must have one big hangover via alcohol & knowing his passenger is dead.
2x been in veicles where the driver was SUPER drunk. Many moons ago. Hoping I would get outta it alive. Well still here.
Too many get behind the wheel & that are high on alcohol or some other of a long list of drugs.
Temp will be very moderate so soon things should be back to normal.

Moved to a dif. house last summer & the storage shed is 1/2 the size. In the rush move just threw things in the shed. Sardine can effect. Only problem is the snow shovel I bought at a 70% discount  :ofrom a closing Target store is packed in there somewhere. :o
Been using a smaller shovel all winter thinking "this had to be the last snow"
Guess I should just open up the shed & pull everything out ( like you did the snowblower. )
As you state " now it will not snow anymore"
On a side note to my surprise there is still a fair amount of snow hanging around Richmond. Melting a lot slower than I thought it would. Nights have gotten near freezing or below.
The poor souls who traveled thru the mountain passes past Hope / past Merritt got stopped & had to spend the entire night in km s lineup. Freezing rain thus highway was like a sheet of ice.
Crazy. Imagine trying to sleep in your vehicle in that cold. Running the engine/heater on...fuel must of gotten low.
Plus when they were given the green light to continue how safe were they to drive with so lack of sleep?
Canyons & passes still have lots of winter left. It has to be finished hopefully in our area ;D
As mentioned it's a big $$$ for a few but for the majority a hit on their wallet.

Anyone caught on the Coquihalla at this time of year and specially when a storm front is the forecast I have no sympathy for.

Surely we can have sympathy for people who make terrible decisions :P

Valentine's Day today the day of love. Surely we can have empathy if we have no sympathy.
Unless we are the tin man in The Wizard of Oz movie.
With all the snow you just know the Highway thru Hell reality tv show has lots of film to edit.
Maybe put some film in the can & have excess to do 10 seasons worth.
The latest is not "let it snow" but for the next 2 days starting tonight it will be "let it rain". At least in the Vancouver area. In the mountain passes who knows...more snow I guess.
