Title: chironomid advice
Post by: dave c on May 28, 2013, 02:30:40 PM
Hey guys: Heading out to francis lake in the next couple days. Planning on tying some chironmid patterns. Never fished this lake before, was thinking of size 14 hook. Is this about right? I would ask for color advice, but don't want to start a war of words, however will share info in fishing reports section, if i have some luck. Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I would arm yourself with sizes 14 & 16 because alot of our bugs here are smaller than interior ones

quick list of colour pallettes i would take -

Black body/red rib/white, copper bead - i use red or wine thread, if using red thread than i always add in a red butt

green body/copper rib/white bead (kind of a bright green) - black thread

tan scud back over olive flashabou/copper ribbing/copper, white bead - olive thread

these are my top producing colour combos locally. If you use black or copper beads then you can also add in some white gills above the bead by the hook eye, this isnt necessary with white beads

good luck out there

The size is the most important thing tie a bunch of different sizes.

Make some black, olive and grey ones.

Go get some bows!!

If you end up trolling around try out a green sprately with a orange wing. I've had success there before with that.

Try one dark or one bright chronie depending on light circumstances. But the key is change up the depth every 10 mins before moving. Tight lines.

When you catch 1 pump it and see what the majority of its food is.
Copy that as best as you can and try that..........
