When this website started in 2001, I envisioned that I would contribute to the recreational fishing community by putting on an annual event that promotes responsible fishing practices, conservation and watershed stewardship. We accomplished that between 2003 and 2012, by hosting "Fish for the Future" (http://fishingwithrod.com/fftf/) in Steveston. The last few years, after our son arrived I had to take a break because there wasn't time to keep doing this, plus the City of Richmond seemed more interested in developing housing than promoting fishing.
This year, with the support from Tourism Chilliwack and Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, I will be reviving an event which the Fraser Valley Salmon Society used to host many years ago. It's called "Chilliwack's All About Fishing", and it'll be hosted from 9am to 5pm on Saturday March 12th at the Chilliwack Heritage Park (the big red barn buildings you see at Lickman Road exit on Highway 1). We are inviting everyone, whether you are young or old, a novice or advanced angler, to come out, learn about fishing opportunities in the Fraser Valley, exchange ideas, and more importantly to have fun.
I've invited all of my colleagues in the industry, experts in a particular fishing discipline, members of various fishing organizations, to come out and host demonstrations on different fishing techniques, etc. The event floor will be 15,000 square feet, so it is quite big! There'll be a large area set up for single and double hand fly casting, fly tying stations for you to try tying your own patterns. There'll be two dozen stations set up to cover topics like jig tying, sturgeon fishing, bar fishing in the Fraser River, river float fishing, lure fishing for steelhead, rod building, lake fishing boat setups, etc. There'll also be a section dedicated for watershed stewardship and conservation, where you can get information from groups such as Steelhead Society of BC, Fraser Basin Council, Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition, etc. DFO and province's conservation officers will be on site to answer your questions. Finally, there'll be lots of activities for the smaller kids too, including fish fighting simulator and arts & crafts.
PRIZES!
Everyone who come to the event will have a chance to win the big prizes. These include:
- $250 Gibbs-Delta Tackle gift package
- 4 hour guided Fraser River sturgeon fishing trip for two people from Great River Fishing Adventures
- 1.5 hour Harrison River eco boat tour with prestige Sportfishing
- Birthday party for 15 kids at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery
- $100 Bent Rods salmon jig kit
- $100 gift certificate at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle
- $100 gift certificate at Fred's Custom Tackle
- Scotty fishing rod holder and transducer mount
- Humminbird PiranhaMAX 197c DI fish finder

In the next few weeks I will be announcing who we have invited to be guest instructors at this year's show.
I'm happy to hear that Rod Toth from Bent Rods Guiding and Fishing will be joining us. As many of you already know, Rod is the go-to guy when it comes to jig fishing for salmon and steelhead. On March 12th, Rod will be tying jigs that are commonly used for both salmon and steelhead in Chilliwack. He will also show you how to set these jigs up properly when fished with or without a float. If you want to catch more winter steelhead this season, be sure to stop by his table!
-
can I bring my dad and my sister ? :)
-
Am definitely interested! However I'm not sure yet whether I will be free on that date..
-
As I mentioned on the Facebook page, I will unfortunately be busy with Provincial Aboriginal Archery Camp that weekend. Should things change, then Max and I would've there in a heart beat.
-
can I bring my dad and my sister ? :)
You can bring whoever you want... Bring the whole neighbourhood. It's a free event.
-
Gibbs-Delta prostaff Rick Clark will be joining us as another demonstrator at the event. He'll be doing saltwater salmon seminars, showing the set-ups for salmon trolling around Vancouver (Burrard Inlet, Howe Sound, Fraser River mouth). :)
Info on more guest instructors to come.
-
Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will be on site to answer your questions on how your freshwater fishing licence dollars are spent, where and when fish are being stocked in our lakes, etc. Staffs will also be hosting ongoing learn to fish sessions for kids. There'll be an aquarium with species stocked by the hatchery as well as the stocking truck for touring.
-
BC Federation of Drift Fishers will be joining us on March 12th. :) BCFDF has been an active organization when it comes to passing on fishing knowledge to young anglers, and preserving fishing opportunities and fish stocks for future generations. It's great to have them helping out at this year's event!
-
Chilliwack Fish and Games Club will be attending the event. Their members will be doing demos on how to set up a salmon float fishing rig. :)
-
Conservation officers will be joining us on March 12th. If you have a question for them, or have concerns which you want to address, be sure to come out to the event and chat with them.
-
Good work Rod for putting this all together, will be a great event.
-
Nick Basok, "The Master", will be presenting the how-tos on Fraser River bar fishing. This one you do not want to miss. ;D
-
Event website is now live:
http://www.fraservalleysalmonsociety.ca/all-about-fishing.html
Lots of new presenters and participating organizations have been added to the list. March 12th's event is looking bigger each day. :)
-

Poster is now available! These will go up around town next week. Please tell your friends. :)
Justin and Cody from Sea-Run Fly and Tackle in Coquitlam will be doing steelhead float fishing demos at the event. If you are heading to the Vedder that day to fish, be sure to stop by!
-
Mike's Reel Repair will be doing basic reel maintenance demos at the show this year. If you got questions on your reels, be sure to come out on March 12th!
-
Dave from the forum and Chad from Valley Custom Rods will be doing rod building demos at the event.
Steven Su from First Light Fishing and Tackle will be doing demos on coarse fishing. He'll be bringing some poles and showing people how to tie up a proper float fishing rig.
Every Day Dan on the forum will be doing steelhead lure fishing demos. If you want to learn how to tie up a trailer hook for spoons, then definitely come to the event. He'll show you how he sets up his spinning rods and what lures he likes to use for steelhead.
flyrod on the forum is going to be providing information on lake fishing. He'll show you what spinning rod and reel outfits are best for trout and kokanee fishing. There'll be a couple of boat setups as well for people to check out.
Is it a party yet? ;)
We still need a few more volunteers to help out with the fly tying, so if you are a fly tyer and would like to teach kids how to tie up their first fly at the event, please let me know.
-
Is it a party yet? ;)
You bringing the beer ? :)
-
You have to ask Chris, he's handling the beverage department... ;D
-
uh oh :(
-
You bringing the beer ? :)
Alcoholic free event and no fish farmed salmon. ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm bringing my own drinks. ;D Hot chocolate since there's always only coffee... ;)
-
Who's bringing the Baileys?
-
Not me, but I am bringing a bunch of prizes for the kids. :)
-
There's gonna be a large section dedicated for fly fishing at the event. Members from the Osprey Flyfishers and Loons Flyfishing Club will be doing fly casting and fly tying lessons. There'll be someone showing you how to set up a fly fishing rod, reel, line, leader, etc... Good opportunity for anyone who wants to get into fly fishing.
-
Very interested in this. Would this be considered a little too old for a five year old?
-
Chuck, I've been trying to put together activities for all ages. For the younger ones, there's gonna be arts and crafts (we have someone who's going to create a big river habitat for kids to paint on, and they'll get a chance to make bugs and fish to add to it), fishing games (still putting it together, but most likely it will involve casting and trying to catch one of the magnetic fish for a prize). There will be a couple of aquariums with native fish that we stock in this area for kids to see. There'll be dead ones at the fish anatomy/ID table as well so anyone can touch them.
I believe there is barrow racing happening next door to our event too so that might be interesting for kids to check out... :)
-
Thanks blair. :)

Gibbs Delta Tackle is donating a gift package valued at $250 for the main prize draw! If you come to the event, you can enter your name in the draw. One entry per person. The gift package will include a variety of salmon, trout and steelhead lures, terminal tackle like floats, swivels, rubber eggs, worms, etc, everything you need for river and lake fishing. If you are coming out to do some steelhead fishing that day, you'll want to stop by the show before or after. Learn from some of the best in the business, and possibly win a bunch of fishing tackle, can't go wrong. ;)
-
Included in the prize draw this year will be a birthday party package at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery! The party is for 15 kids, 2.5 hours long, which includes fishing at the trout ponds. It's an awesome way to celebrate the big day. :)
When you come to the event, you'll get a ticket to fill out your name for these prize draws. Free entry, a room full of fishing knowledge and a chance to win some great prizes, can't beat that! See you on March 12th. ;D
-
Rod from Bent Rods is donating a salmon jig kit which will be part of the prize draw at the event. :)
http://www.bentrods.ca/specials/salmon-jig-kit
Rod's also going to be doing jig fishing and tying demos throughout the day so you definitely want to stop by.
-

We'll also be giving away a Scotty fishing rod holder and their new transducer mount.
-
We'll also be giving away a Humminbird PiranhaMAX 197c DI fish finder on March 12th!
-
For these draw prizes, you don't have to be there early to win. You can go fishing on the Vedder in the morning, come by the event afterward and enter. We'll do the draw after the event and contact the winners by phone and mail the prizes out.
-
Today was shopping day... ;D We went and picked up prizes for the event from Redl Sports, which has always been a very generous supporter for all the projects I'm involved with. We got lots of rod/reel combos, lures, bait, tackle boxes to give away in the kids casting contest on Saturday. :)

Fantastic! Looks like a huge amount of time and collaboration already went in to resurrecting this occasion. And free! I'll see you there! ;D

OK, so this has been niggling at me, :) help me understand what the word "Chilliwack's" means
Is "Chilliwack's" an abbreviation for "Chilliwack is". Ergo... Chilliwack Is All About Fishing
Or does the apostrophe "s" denote possession. Ergo... All About Fishing is being held in Chilliwack
Or maybe both! :)
-
Both, but the word "chilliwak" connected with "is" is a contraction.
The word chilliwak means something like (don't recall the official wording) place were water Meets ( all the creeks and such)
The fact that Chilliwak is an urban fishing destination also would allow it take ownership in the possessive.
Lots of other places to fish but Chilliwak is the most promoted.
Let it stay so and the other places will retain some semblance of peace a little longer 8).

Yes, I stand corrected. "Chilliwack's" is a contraction, not an abbreviation. My apologies to all of my English grammar teachers :)
-
Just counted, we have at least 250 prizes to give away in the kids casting contest... so you all better bring your kids on Saturday to claim a prize because I do not want these to sit in my house in the next twelve months. :o
-
Two days to go! The salmon society directors are meeting tonight to finalize everything. Tomorrow after we set up, then it's show time. ;D
-
Included in the prize draw now is a 4 hour guided Fraser River sturgeon fishing trip for two people from Great River Fishing Adventures!
-
Also included in tomorrow's prize draw is a 1.5 hour Harrison River eco boat tour for four people with Prestige Sportfishing. :)

Wow, what an awesome show! Huge turnout, 1600-1700 in attendance, tons of families who all seemed to enjoy themselves, super info groups and expert fishers/fly tiers/bait curers/casting instructors, etc who shared their skills willingly. And all free!
Kudos to Rodney who spearheaded what I'm sure will be an expanding and annual event. Very well done bud ;)
-
Glad to hear how successful it was. I really wish I could have been there with Max. Our Archery Camp was a huge success too though, and we are back at it tomorrow with a 3D shoot.
-

Expansion?!?! Does that mean more work? ;D
Attendance was at 2,000 people actually. We gave out just over 1,900 draw tickets plus we had around 60 volunteers.
Many thanks to everyone who volunteered. This is a collective effort to make the event a success.
Some photos. :)

Good job Rod and to all the volunteers. Looks like a nice show with good attendance. An enormous amount of work to organize I would think. You should be proud.

Thank you Rodney for setting up the event and everyone who helped out, it was a blast and I had lots of fun helping out.
Hoping this becomes a regular thing every year and maybe even something similar to this could be done closer to Vancouver in the future as well? ;)
