you guys take all the fun out of it with 20lb main and 15lb leader!
I use and have used 12lb and 8lb leader for years and rarely break off any fish.
I have landed several fish in the high teens as well as a couple around 20lbs with no issue.

Have to agree with that. Maxima 15 main, maxima 10 or less leader. Rarely had issues in 30 plus years.

the op ask for advice on fish hes breaking off with 12lb test. their is really on 2 solutions. less drag on the reel or more line strenght. a 18.8 steelhead was weighed in at freds last week. are you telling me you would be able to put the brakes on a fish like that in fast water with 10 or 8lb test? why not give yourself a chance.

its one of those things i rather have and not need than need and not have.

Hey to each their own right. I would say if he’s breaking 12 pound leader it’s either poor knots or as you said too much drag.

There is nothing wrong with heavier line. the costs are same, but less worry of breaking the line and leave trash in the riverbed
40lb braid as main, 15lb leader for any salmon other than chinook. that braid line is still thinner than 10lb mono

But if you use a really light leader are you not going to have to play your fish longer wearing it out thus maybe affecting his survival when he it released?  I use 20 main and either 14 or 12 lb for a leader.
Just my 2 cents.
