Help...Fly Fishing For Springs??
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:01:01 PM »

Hey

I'm new to fly fishing for salmon.  I fly fish alot but just moved here last year and wanted to get into fly fishing for salmon.  I have a 9wt sage with a good drag reel so i'm ready but dont really know any technique or where to fish for them.  Any tips, flies or places to go?  I dont have a boat so can only do salt water beach fishing or river fishing.  Any advice on where to go and what to use would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Are you on the Island or the Lower Mainland? If you were on the Island I would say to go up towards Nile Creek or Campbell River. The pinks are now running on the Island and they would be a  hoot to catch on a fly rod. Fly fishing shops in Nanaimo or out towards Nile Creek would be able to give you directions as to when,  and where  to fish,  and what to use.

I am in the lower mainland and wont be going to the island.  Too expensive to get over there and dont want to put up with the ferry and all that jazz just for a weekend.  I went out last year and had a blast with pinks in the vedder on my 5 wt.  but I just bought a new 9 wt and want to get out, but never fished for springs or coho in a river or from shore....

any advise on where to go and what to use would be nice!!

Heavy sink tip and an strong hook egg fly.

Hasn't produced anything for me yet on the Chedder, but I know it works.

Pay close attention to the sun, springs go deep when it is out. At night when not spooked you can find them within 2 feet of the shore, the path of least resistance. I have found them very light sensitive, so use dark colored fly patterns and stay away from anything shiny or with flash. This may sound strange with all the lore out there and the fact that so many anglers use red patterns, but just remember red is the first color to turn black as light recedes.

thanks guys.  i may try that this weekend, if time permits.  So deep and dark.  sounds good to me.  High in the vedder or low?  I havent heard of people getting very much so maybe try high first and work down

Go on the upper river and hike around until you can find some decent water to yourself. I've fly fished the lower end a few times without a sniff.

Good tips guys,  I hope to try this myself when I get back to town from work.  Will post to let everyone know how it worked.

I've always found that first light is the best for the bite.
