Hey guys i heared rumors of the squamish being closed for pinks this year...Does anybody no. Also how big is the run supposed to be this year.

Whether it will be closed will depend on the returns. Two years ago the heavy rains washed out alot of the redds during the spawning season.

The Squamish will be closed this year for pinks. If the run size merrits it, then it will be opened. The run was hammered in the 2003 fall flood and DFO is taking a precautionary approch to see what shape the return is. The brood was large but it is not suspected to be very strong this year. There is no estimate of returning run size but a fry downstream program run on the Cheakamus in the spring of 2004 was not encouraging. Everyone is taking a wait and see attitude. Hope this helps.

ARE YOU CRAZY DENNISK PINKS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS RED SPRINGS. I LOVE BBQ THEM . ALSO THEY ARE GREAT SMOKED. PINKS ARE REALLY GOOD

Pinks are quite good when they are fresh.

We enjoy eating the pinks that are caught in estuary Fraser. Although they are not as good as coho or red spring, they are not awful... I can think of a dozen other fish that are worse than pinks.

Chrome bright pinks caught and cooked on the same day are just fine. We are so spoiled here that I rarely ever kill one, but if I get a chrome enough female I sometimes take it and cure the roe.

 :)spent many years working in the charlottes, river inlet, west coast of van island, fraser river etc.  never ate pinks until a couple of years ago when we took a few silver ones to a local restaurant and they cooked us up some pink salmon fish n chips (fresh).
i was very impressed.   

my favourite is still fraser river sockeye slightly salted and dried and cooked on the bbq, and queen charlotte spring salmon that is not white but not red (pink meat). i would have to say nothing beats these two fish.

Pinks is actually not bad when compared to chum. Oh and pink sashimi is good. (but nothing tops sockeye)

actually, i think chum salmon is one of the most under rated of all the salmon. i think it falls under sockeye and springs for next best tasting fish.  its all in how you prepare it. salted/baked chum or pickled chum salmon, hard smoked chum and chum ground up into a japanese fish cake are just a few ways to eat this salmon. it would also have to be a chum that wasn't caught in the vedder but rather in the mouth of the fraser or ocean.  never really been a big coho salmon fan. i just like catching this species.
