Title: January Vedder River Cleanup
Post by: Rodney on December 20, 2005, 03:59:13 PM
The Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Coalition will be hosting a Vedder River cleanup in January.

Date: Saturday January 14th 2006
Time: Meet between 9:00am - 9:30am. The cleanup will take about 2 to 3 hours.
Location: Meet at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. Click here (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/cleanriver/pic/map.gif) for a map to the reserve.

Please note:

•   Dress appropriately. January weather can be interesting (If snow is on the ground, this cleanup is cancelled and an email will be sent).
•   Sturdy footwear is a must.
•   Gloves are important.
•   A broom handle with a nail on the end or a pronged garden cultivator is ideal for reaching items in bushes and other hard to reach places.

Coffee and donuts will be available when you arrive in the morning.

The CVRCC is making a difference. Each cleanup results in 2.5 to 3 tons of garbage being collected. In addition, the ADOPT-A-RIVER part of our program continues to flourish. We now have 20 of the 25 sections of the river adopted. That is, groups have accepted the responsibility of keeping a specific area as clean as possible during the year. This success is due to the many volunteers such as you being involved. The directors do appreciate your participation and help. The ultimate winner as a result of your successful program is the environment.

There will be three other river cleanups later on this year, so please mark them in your calendar:

Saturday, April 22, 2006   (Earth Day/Pitch-In Week)
Saturday, July 15, 2006
Sunday, September 24, 2006  (BC Rivers Day)

The Directors of the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Coalition continue to have excellent support from the City of Chilliwack, the Fraser Valley Regional District and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Without the support of these agencies, we would not be able to operate this program.

The Directors take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, good health and happiness in the coming year. We look forward to seeing you on January 14.

All things being well, I'll be there on saturday.  It'll make me feel good knowing that I'm contributing to our local waterways.
I've also posted the details on another website, so hopefully we'll get a few from there too.

By the way, for those of you that are sitting there reading this saying, 'I don't even fish there so why should I help?".  Well I've never fished there and I'm going!  Maybe it's purely to help clean up the river, maybe it's so that I can meet a few Veteran Vedder fisherman and learn a  bit about the river!  Whatever it is, I'll be there.

Depending on what kind of condition the river is in, I'm planning on bringing my gear!!  I think that I have also recruited 3 more people to help. ;)

Sounds good Dave. Regarding bringing your gear, you can leave it back at the nature reserve in the storage room while you're out doing the cleanup (Don't leave any Drennans around though, they might mysteriously disappear if certain director is guarding them...). This way you don't have to worry about leaving your gear in the car while cleaning up the river.

PS, I don't use Drennens though!!  Balsa for me!! ;D ;D

Are chest waders a must there?

I can't drive all that way (I live in Burnaby) and not at least have a go.  If the fish are a no-show, then at least I should have learnt a thing or two by trying. :)  Also I believe someone mentioned that the Upper end, at least, is still fishable.  Come on BS, it'll be good to wet a line with you! ;D

Hello everybody. What a great day at the Vedder River Clean up! I have not been to this clean up before, but I have to say that I will be attending all the future ones if possible.
I was fortunate to be teamed up with Tom ( Allwaysfishin ). In only a 400 yard area of the river we managed to collect a truck load of garbage. It is truly amazing how much garbage is out there. I always pick up garbage when I am out fishing (my vest is usually full by the end of the day) but I did not realize how much was really out there until I saw all of these vehicles full of garbage collected from the river!!
It was really good to hang out with Tom. We have a lot in common and have fished and hunted in a lot of the same areas of BC. Cheers Tom!! Tom took a couple of pictures of the garbage collected, hopefully he can post them later.

Congratulations to everybody that was involved with the organizing, and collecting! Not to mention the doughnuts and coffee. ;D

It's hard to believe that they do that three or four times a year and always collect that much garbage. Wow.

Thanks everyone!! :)

Yes Ats, it was a great day out!!  I to couldn't believe the amount of garbage out there!!  But I guess that's why there is a Vedder Clean up!!  It really needs it!!  I'm also sorry that you got stuck with Tom!! ;D ;D  I saw him up river after the clean up, hadn't hooked anything, but said that he wasn't giving up yet!! ;)
Also took the three people from my work, Sean, Jay and his girlfriend, up for a tour of the Vedder.  Went to the hatchery to show them how it works, and some of the more scenic parts of the Vedder as they wanted to finish off there film!!  They aren't fishermen, but the saw the need to come out and do a little something for nature.  So I thank them a lot.  BTW, was a bit surprised to still see that many Coho in the hatchery channel!!
Anyhow, it was a great turn out and kudos to those that gave some of their time for a good cause!!  Be looking forward to getting out there again. ;D ;D

Nice to see you all today. :) Good to have a huge turnout, around 120 people I believe, a great start in 2006.

I've put all the photos sent to me in the following album:

Thanks a lot for being out there today guys. It truly is amazing that we can find so much garbage four times a year. Iimagine what things would look like out there if all of it was left there!  :o

We had a better turnout of volunteers today than we expected. The weather did not look too promising before 7:30 this morning, but it turned out to be a rather pleasant day.  :)
We had about 125 people participate today including boyscouts, kayakers, fishermen, trailwalkers and people who otherwise enjoy nature on the banks of the Chilliwack/Vedder river system. As a result things look just a little bit better out there again, and you guys should be proud of a job well done!

Probably the hardest working volunteers today:

was nice meeting a couple of you guys and putting faces to names...Paul, you saw who i was with, well i think you would have all died laughing if you were with us, i remembered my boots about half an hour out of Blaine, or rather that i left them by my door so i'd remember them... :-\ so only had my b.ball shoes..and my bud ron didn't bring his either, we got ranger and did three bags worth on the parking area and fronting and across the road, but if you would have seen us trying to get back to the water, well that was something else, there is no "shallow" water anywhere around there as a beaver has been very very busy...we climbed a few logs and managed to fall into it and got pretty soaked...but the funny thing was watching my buddy try to "jump" the one section...it was about 4 feet across...so he gets back for a running start and fly's about two feet and foot down in the middle...well a lot of swearing and laughing ensured..but we did manage to extract ourselves and the garbage too....

it was nice today to see that many people out doing it..was also surprised at how many fisherman were out too...and thank god it didn't rain on us like it has all week!!!...good job guys and gals...

Thanks to all the people from FWR and the other fishing web sites that turned out today and made the cleanup such a success once again. It was good to meet new faces and of course all the regulars that turn out at each and every cleanup since CVRCC started over 3 years ago.

I am always impressed that so many will give up part of their weekend and travel in some cases a 100 km or more to take part.

It is great that we all can put something back into the Chilliwack Vedder River that gives us so many days of enjoyment each year be it anglers, kayakers, walkers, birders and other citizens concerned about our environment.

Thanks once again to all that make the Adopt A River program such a success, it was very rewarding to the directors today to see well over a 100 people take part today. Wonderful ;D ;D

had a lot of fun today, good coffee, good folks to hang out with. Really good to meet addicted to steel (paul), we'll have to hit the flow one day. Was a great turn out today and as Paul mentioned, we found a pretty hefty amount of garbage for 2 guys in small stretch of river bank. I think I am going to be a lot more conscious of what i walk past on my daily fishing adventures.... reminding myself that it shouldn't only be 1 day every three months that motivate me to pick up the trash i see on every outing. I'm going to add extra trash bags to my gear list.
Well, to all who organized and participated in todays event..... congrats on a job well done, look forward to seeing ya' all again in a few months

Wanted to add my thanks also to the great group of volunteers who came out to remove more debris from the Chwk Vedder River.

Sorry that golfman and his buddy got so wet, have to blame those Canadian beavers. When I gave you the Ranger area to do as you knew the area, didn't realize it was that wet in there. Would like to have more time to chat with you some time.

We also had interest from three new groups that were out today in Adopting a section of the River and that is just super!
After spending 62 years on this river system, it is heartening to see the support from so many people, from all over the Fraser Valley and beyond,  to help maintain this great treasure we have.
Well done All !!! ;D

look forward to it lew, was probably more fun that way anyways...poor ron has gotten his share of wet feet the last week at my expense...only thing i was dissapointed in was he wouldn't go back in and grab me one of the long stripped beaver sticks so i could have a walking stick...what's a couple more feet when your already wet???

Hi All,

A great day!  It's been a long time that I held my head so high!

I was expecting to pick up a fair bit of crap but Holy Moly, I was amazed.  I thought that the bag of used baby diapers was bad, that was until I found the used ADULT diaper!!!  One major point that I would like to make is that before we got out there I was expecting lots of fishing-type rubbish (line etc), however apart from 3 small bundles of line and 1 small bag of empty lure packets that was it.  Another proud moment!

I would also like to correct Buckeye, I don't think that anyone there worked harder than anyone else!  Perhaps except for the likes of Chris, Rodney, George and all of the other organisers, who make this whole project possible.  Thank you guys!

It was great to meet a few of you yesterday, can't wait to see you on the flow or at the next clean up!

Well after the clean up we headed up above Allison Pool, in fact we dropped in just above Tom (Alwaysfishin)!  No fish but plenty learnt.  What a beautiful piece of water, I counted myself very lucky and privileged to be fishing in such a spot.  Hey Tom, did you get any?

Can't wait to get back and catch some of those incredible Steel.

had a really good float down in the prison run but..... i missed it hehe. the guys below me started bomb casting to where they saw my float disappear, by the time i re rigged with a fresh tiger prawn, they had casted in my strike zone prolly 10 times. I worked it up and around that same drift and nadda thing.
But.... It was so refreshing, after all this rain, to have the skies cooperate and allow us a morning of work and an afternoon of fishing.
And DAVID.... next time i'm headin out, I'll try and let ya know, be cool to chase some steel with ya.

An update.

Two bins were used to collect the garbage for the January cleanup:

Chilliwack Bin (GBHNR) - 1.58 tonnes
FVRD Bin (Rod & Gun Club) - 1.08 tonnes
for a total of 2.66 tonnes

I wonder if that belonged to the same guy that lost his shoes, socks and pants I found there? :D

It was a nice day to be out there for the clean-up……what a lucky break in the weather.  Thanks again to all the organizers that have given so much of their own time to put this together, I look forward to doing my little part in helping out again in Apr.
