Title: Do you fish over the Holiday Season?
Post by: RalphH on December 21, 2020, 09:35:16 AM
I used to but over the years I've done less and less of it. For the most part I don't fish from around the first week of December until mid-January or even February depending on the weather.

Every season I tell myself I'm going to try for steelhead, but I can't motivate myself to get out there, especially since my daughter was born (she's 12 now).  20+ years ago I would probably be on the Vedder or the Chehalis at least a few times in December, now I generally don't fish at all from December to March, then I slowly start trout fishing in the spring until salmon gets going again. I do take the time to rehab my ear, service my reels, wash my vest, organize all my gear, and take inventory for what I need for the coming season.  It isn't fishing, but I still enjoy getting ready for the coming year - it helps build anticipation.

I go down to my local stream as often as I can during the winter months. Harder now with a child but still get out a bit. Don't usually catch anything but the solitude is nice. On the plus side, caught my first bull trout there yesterday! Just a little guy but was totally unexpected. That system had an uncommonly good return of coho and chum this year so maybe that enticed some bulls up from the Fraser? Will redouble my efforts for steelhead this year, as maybe all these salmon and bull trout are a good omen :P

Usually, no.  But...I am trying to perfect my egg nymphing technique, so I will try to get out while eggs as a food source is still on the mind  of the  ct.

Having said that, I will opt for a fairly dry day. I don't want to do it bad enough to stand for long periods in a cold December rain.

i love fishing and being out once salmon season winds down. meat guys are gone and so are the crowds. i have had some of my most memorable days fishing for species that feed on eggs. will be out on christmas morning this year for the first time since the new covid rules targeting bulls and hopefully a few more steel.

here are a few pics from the last few weeks. hope to add to them during the holidays

Well by far the views are by people either not registered users or don't sign in when they come in for a look. Registered users on line at anyone times is usually a half dozen or less.

...thanks for posting the photos, [sigh]

Nice pics bbf.

Looks like a female  and male Cutthroat. This time of year is usually a good time to get into some bigger Cutts since many will be getting ready to fatten up and spawn.

Haha didn’t even notice the poll when I saw this.

I’ve been out a couple times but likely won’t get a chance until early into the new year. Two little ones at home will do that to you.

Even though you can't see the maxillary, I think that middle fish is a rainbow.  Nice fish!

The char appears well fed and looks like what used to be fairly common in the Vedder, especially in the spring ... small heads, chunky bodies, bright, likely anadromous.

I agree it looks like a rainbow though the spots are more like those of a cutthroat. That's not uncommon on the coast. The 3rd fish is a cuttie but also looks atypical.

Looks like a typical Cutbow to me.

first fish is a sea run bull trout. little on the smaller size. aprrox  3lbs. the salt firms them up and gives them that bluish green tinge. the average one is usually 3 to 6 pounds but 10 pounders can happen

second fish is either a fall or summer run steelhead. debatable on run timing. approx 6 to 7 pounds. typical summer.

third fish is defiantly a cutty, i have few other pics with the orange throat. my personal best in a local river at 4ish pounds.

just for reference im 6'3 285lbs with bear mitts for hands. i make a 50lb halibut look small.
