Title: Chehalis River, October 28th 2014
Post by: BwiBwi on October 29, 2014, 12:51:08 AM
With all these rain, it is 'high' time to try the chehalis.  I thought of trying the canyon first but wait I'm here cause water's up...so... Okay start from bridge area. Surprisingly not many people there, and not many fish either.  I started venture downriver and came upon a small pool. I decided to give it a try. Not long after I started working the pool a take down!!!

Hmmm. That doesn't feel like coho, yap a chum.  Oh well still it's a fish.
A few casts later another take down and its a...... CHUM
and more chum
and a few more!!!!

Argh. This is too much!!
And the next fish I decided I'll just force it in and if it pops off great! I don't have to try getting hook out of those sharp teeth filled chum mouth!

Surely enough leader snapped and the fish leaped out of water....

Intermission
.......
#%^?#!
After a few choice words
.......

That was a coho!!!  Man I so wanted to kick myself!!
I quickly retied and rebait then cast out...
And more casts.......
Finally float shaked, I quickly set the hook and yes!!! It's a roller it's a coho!!!
I proceed to land a few more and this is what I get to bring home today.

That's a nice two-day limit. Well done. Sounds like you hit the run timing perfectly.

Cool shot man. That sure gets me pumped to go fishing. I just don't understand the point of telling multiple people you don't even know that fishing is good somewhere. River's are already over crowded. All your report is going to accomplish is more people fishing the river you like to fish. So whats the point . So that you can post a picture of 4 dead fish . That's just not what it's about for me . And i guess I'm just a getting a Little frustrated that thats what its about to a lot of the guy's i see out there .

Well said, that was the one river I always hiked to get away from the crowds. Now its just a gong show like the Vedder.  More surrey Richmond Burnaby people crowding your way soon!!!!!!!

Couldn't agree with you more... Although the chehalis is no secret this report pputs this River at the front of people's minds and now alas, youll be fishing with 50 bottom bouncers next time.

The good thing is that it's a long drive to chase yesterday's report when we all know the fishing spots are limited, the walking and hiking often not worth it, and easy to get skunked if you don't hit the right water level.

Nice fish guys!

Lotta butt hurt here it seems.

Here's something...maybe stop fishing on the weekends when the rest of the province probably has time off as well? Just be happy there is fish. Not everyone is gonna get a fish all the time whether it is crowded or not.

Nice fish!

Uh oh. Someone posted a report about somewhere other than the Vedder. Quick, get the Kleenex... :P

I get a kick out of everyone who moans about it when someone posts about a system other than the Vedder. You're only drawing more attention to it and making people more curious.

There is something for that...it's called Midol.

Rivers, the only time rivers probably haven't been crowded is well before our time anyway.

Let's just put it this way, everyone is ok with it on the internet but in my years of fishing I've never come across anyone on the river that's said "Boy, I'm sure glad this spot is packed with people today."

I myself dont care sure some times I enjoy the privacy but if I really want solitude from people when fishing, I am not doing in local rivers like chehalis, vedder, harrison and fraser, thats like complaining about how vancouver is too busy.

What's our population like exactly right now in Vancouver BC? 2.1 or 2.2 million people? Gonna run in to the odd person that likes to fish I am sure. It's something you just have to get used too.

One way or another people are either going to hear about a place like Chehalis or find out from pro shop or online, seeing as there is more then one website to get that kinda info from and not all are gonna hold that information in the same black helicopter secrecy.

Nothing new that the Cheh starts to pick up with fishing pressure. Systems on the north side of the Fraser peak in November rather than October on the south side.

Dewdney slough up to the hatchery will start to pick up with pressure as well. This is only a good thing as there is more productive water to fish.

Enjoy it while you can as it will all be over soon - for this season.

Regardless. Its just ridiculous to me to feel the need to post that you caught x amount of fish at certain river at a certain time on the internet for everyone to see. You don't know who is a member and reading that particular post . Could be a guy who likes to bottom bounce and all his betty buddies. It's no secret that there are a lot of people that feel posting reports on the net is terrible for our sport. These forum's are great for many other things fishing related . Just not where and when . Personally i think they should do away with the report section all together.Out of principal. The best line I've heard a fishermen say is " I cant tell you but i can show you".Don't get me wrong i don't mind sharing the river with people. But guys that respect the river , respect the fish , and respect the sport. At least when you show someone a spot . You know who it is and what kind of a person they are.

Access to the fishing reports is limited to about 800 members actually, a good % of them are also old accounts which have been inactive for a long time.

If anyone is seriously concerned about fishing reports, you're welcome to have me removing your access to this section by adding you to the filter. Lets not be part of the problem, reduce access to fishing reports by starting with yourself! ;D

I'm confused Rod. If you are cool about fishing reports why was mine removed last year again? Gravel pit one.

Like yourself I put effort into my postings. That particular one involved a couple of hours of work at home on the computer editing pics/maps/info.

The Chehalis river was crowded back in the  80's when I fished it. The run near the hatchery was bring you own rock. The Bible Camp run was so busy that I was catching coho under the guys lines that were casting to the other side of the thinking that the fish were there. After 2 fish they changed their minds. I moved on. We had word of mouth back then now we have the internet and youtube.
I post the odd report but I wait a week to do so.
I know the fuel is more expensive these days and population has been pumped up by the internet and youtube to go fishing and the ethics of the fishing people now adays is in the toilet.
My favorite river to my horror was being fished by bottom bouncers. I gave them a piece of my mind. It was like water off a duck's back. These clowns were still fishing the same piece of water when I walked by with my two cohos. I was happy to see that they didn't come to fish.
Maybe some one should develope a virus that will attack just fishing blogs, youtube vidoes and reports on river conditions, potential fish returns etc.

I keep hearing the song "LET IT GO" (from Frozen) - my daughters keep singing it over and over!  In fact, tonight they're going out as Elsa and Anna!  So here's an idea for you dennisK.  Do up a post with a map, directions, and photos to your home, and I'll bring my girls over to Trick or Treat and sing you this song!!!  I think the majority of members here will fully agree!

Happy Halloween Everybody!!!   :)

You can be as secretive as you want in your fishing report posts. I used to  work at a very popular tackle shop. We and and all the other shops send hundreds of guys to all the rivers. Shop staff have be known to draw very detailed maps with an X to mark the proverbial spot to stand on. There's a lot of resources out there to find out where to fish. Social media is a prime place to start. Parked cars on the side of the road are a dead giveaway. You can hang out in a  tackle shop  and eavesdrop or get another customer to loosen his lips. Everyone has a success fishing story that they want to share, its our ego,its human nature.

This is what a lot of us have been saying, people don't realise "there" spot, is already out there to hundreds of others. People just may not being able to fish all the time so maybe thats why it seems like no ones around or so few people or the most likely case they hike around working the river like a good fisherman should be doing anyway. But most don't anymore, especially if you watch places like the Ved or Chehalis, they find a whole and practically move in for the rest of the day and work it to death or nothings left and all we're all guilty of that time to time.

i guess its easy to blame fwr reports section for all the mess on the rivers today. i really havent had a problem finding new spots to fish on the vedder at all.....sometimes im only one there....just takes alot of hiking and reading water. i wont post that in the reports but will state upper or lower river. as for crowds its been the same every year sometimes less and were going back late 90's. But i also meet new friends on the river as well and i avoid the bottom bouncers in the canal so it balances out for me. Ive met Rod and Nina a few times as well on the flow. If you dont like crowds then go fish in december..........lots of parking everywhere.

We all like the rivers we fish in BUT we dont own the rivers. They belong to the governments as well as the fish in there. We buy licenses to have a privilege to fish them. Don't expect to be the only one out there during peak season. Social media is relatively new but the crowds have been there for decades.

I have fished the Chehalis since the early 80's and it was way more crowded than it is now. There was no internet fishing reports or cellphones then. Chehalis was a November fishery so when the Vedder fishing was waning late October every single guy who fished the Vedder/Chilliwack would then go to the Chehalis. It was crazy busy. And I can tell you that there were WAY more snaggers back then compared to today. I am glad the river blew straight through the Easter Seal. Now the river has fewer classic coho runs, but there are way fewer people fishint it. All you have to do is to learn how to fish different runs/conditions and you'll still get lots of fish. You have to get out of your comfort zone. Since the river straightened I have not seen one person bottom bouncing. I've always fished among short floaters and anyone trying to deliberately snag fish usually got tuned in pretty quickly. Don't blame the OP for sharing. Chehalis is not a secret river.

Is there a water meter for the chehalis like the vedder.
It's funny to see the haters on here. I just love going to a hole where someone is fishing and asking nicely if I a May fish in, to just get a dirty look. I've found though if you walk 10- 15 min from your car your on your own. Hope I didn't give to big of a report.

Been a member for years but usually just follow along and enjoy the posts/rants ... this one seems to sum it up ;-)

In general Vedder/Chehalis, you just need to walk 5-10 min to get away from the crowds.
