Title: sins of Sockeye fishery
Post by: scales on September 04, 2006, 08:38:59 PM
It's was a great season for Sockeye fishing and I'm glad it will be over in a couple of days in the upper Fraser!!! I was disappointed with the lack of enforcement at some bars.
Witnessed all the sins of this meat fishery: :(  :(
-Double dippers...try 4 to 5x per day outing.
-Bagging 3x over their limits in one outing.
-Fishing with barbed hooks.
-Keeping body hooked fish.
-Fishing after dark.
-killing and throwing away a small fish for a larger one.
-Not recording Spring catches.
-Garbage all over the bars.
Overall most fishers were following the rules, however it takes a few to screw things up.  We've told many about rules but got a finger instead!!  Wish I had not witness this kind of behaviour out there.

Kind of makes you wonder where was the enforcement that was promised earlier this year. :o

That's kinda what I was thinking.  I didn't see an officer once this season.  :-\

DFO always seem to make a big show every year about bringing in resources from other provinces to help enforce the regulations during the sockeye season. Yadda, yadda yadda. They'll make a few appearances during the chinook bar fishery but mysteriously disappear during the sockeye fishery.

Remember, if you see violations - call the DFO and report them.  I know it may be a small consolation prize - but at least it's something we all can do.  I've got the number programed into my cell phone.  Hey scales - I hope you reported them.

...at least report the more "serious" violations such as the double dippers and limit violators... :-\

DFO were checking everyone coming outta peg today and inspecting their catches and licenses.

Report to DFO?  Hate to say but it's a waste of cell phone time, done this before with no response!!!  I'll told many about the REGS.  It's time the COs do their jobs!!! and not me.

I think DFO put more efforts towards larger scale poaching this year.

Why the surprise? It's just like other things in life. Why go for the petty little fisherman who takes home an extra fish(or 5) when there are poachers out there with nets? The single fisherman at least contributes to the economy with line, hooks and maybe a license. You can compare it to the average marijuana user. Should he/she be punished or the person that is cultivating multiple pounds a month? Why waste the resources on the small offender?

THIS IN NO WAY MEANS I CONDONE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE DIPING!! OR THE USE OF MARIJUANA.

Perhaps you should try it. You may notice the caps button then  :-*

Sorry had to shout it out. I thought someone might read that and think I condone the illegal activities.

Its amazing how fast that type of activity stops when you pull out your cellphone as soon as you see it....however its a bit dangerous too...  If you feel strongly about it, the best thing you can do is take a picture, discreetly, of what you see happening.  Have DFO's number in your cellphone so you can quickly report it, and if possible, get the liscence plates of the "accused" persons vehicle.  I think the key word is discreet, the guys doing this have a disregard for authority and consequence in the first place or they wouldnt be doing it, so you need to be careful.

Its not enough these days to just "go to a different bar".  We owe it to each other to report this stuff.

I might look into releasing a pack of wolves at pegleg during a peak fishing time, like they did on the simpsons episode.  Man that was a funny sequence!!

I am just glad it is over now and we no longer have to listen to Fish Freaks daily reports of not having to work and being able to fish  :):)  now we get to see if he knows how to really catch a fish  ;D ;D ;D

It's harder to teach an "old poacher" how to respect fish. They are probably the worst offenders out there. I sneek up behind them when there poachen and give them the old "hot wader" by peeing down there back when the try to bonk the fish. :o

It's over for another year gang.... none of it is anything we don't see year in and year out!! Time to start thinking about Coho season.

Well 75% of the people that were fishing for socs are done fishing for the year. Thank goodness for that.

I get my boat in 2.5 weeks and can fish anywhere I want  ;D No crowds for me after that. When it rains I will be covered. When its cold I have a heater.

This must be a record for recreational harvest of Sockeyes this year.  Sept. 8, 2006 News release by The Pacific Salmon Commission indicated we took out 90,000 Sockeyes  :o
Enjoy your catches!!!

Remember this is an estimate and open to question.

The commercial catch was 4 million plus.

They seem to do surveys at some bars and then I guess make the guestimate equation. I hold up my fish whenever someone flies by as well so they can count them.

I was tempted to moon them when they flew over...but never got enough people on my bar to go along.......now that would have been fun!

They use a formula that uses the results from the creel survey and the overflight information from aircraft. Of course the survey crews only rely on the honesty of people giving them the information but of course fishers always tell the truth don't they. ;D ;D

Hard to say the correct number of sockeye that each sectors takes but I think the recreational sector will come in way higher than the figure posted on this thread. I partly base that on the large number some members were posting about complete with pictures as it seemed regular vistors to the river throughout the openings were piling up some good numbers. I believe the numbers posted on a thread by a few of our members was around 300 sockeye taken along with 80 springs. You combine that with the number of people out this season it will most likely be the most sockeye harvested in the Fraser River by the recreational people

However if the figure even reached 150,000 fish or more for the recreational sector it is a drop in the bucket for all the sockeye taken by all 4 sectors, recreational, First Nation, commercial and test fisheries but of course there is other concerns more controversial than the numbers of sockeye taken. Of course these concerns have been debated the last month or more. ;D

I think 90,000 is on the low side.  Lets throw some numbers around.  Assuming we had an average daily vehicle count of 80 with 2 fisher per vehicle.  We have about 20 fishable bars(boat and drive to).  We were given 35 Days at the Sockeyes.  My guess a success harvest rate of 70%.  156,800 Sockeyes were killed by my calculations. ::)

My estimate is 200,000 pieces.

You guys forget that during the time when the nets were all over the river, many people went home skunked. To assume too high a catch success % may not be attainable during the nets season. Only towards the last 2 weeks, fishing became more consistent.

No matter what the final figure is or how it was arrived at, it is still a small percentage compared to other user groups.

Reminds me of a funny story. Im campin on an island and my uncle knows and flys for coast guard so he drops by on his way down and  hovers right in front of us not far away.  We all drop shorts to ankles and give him a nice moon and he rotates the helicopter and shows that hes got a bunch of elderly passengers! hahaha they both groups were shocked we had a good laugh
