St Mary Lake, September 21st & 22nd 2013
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:43:29 PM »

Just a short update, headed back with a buddy this past weekend for a quick trip.

The weather was dramatically different, the water level was much higher and on both days the water was really choppy due to the wind. Resultingly the fish had moved on from the spots I previously got success at, the big perch had completely disappeared and we only got small perch and four small bass (10 inches).

Despite that, trout fishing was excellent.

The most productive spot was the west side of the lake, trolled a willow leaf and worm and we ended up landing approx 20 fish between us in an evening and a morning/afternoon the following day. Would have caught more but lots threw the hook during playing them. All the fish were decent with smallest fish around a foot , the bulk being around 14 and the largest around 16 inches. Had one much bigger trout on the line but it wrapped around the propellor and got away just as it dodged the net.

I will probably book a trip next year near the end of May to the lodge there for the anniversary

This time we stayed at Greenacres. A little more expensive but you might want to look at their log cabins if you want to keep your wife happy! Owner is very friendly, boats are included in the price and cabins have wifi access and TVs.

Thanks for the information. We'll check that our next May.
