Title: Dock fishing for shiners
Post by: RRV on June 16, 2020, 12:49:22 PM
I'm heading out to the west coast in a couple weeks with my kids. My daughter is 8, and she gets terribly sea sick on boats, but loves dock fishing for shiners, black bass and whatever else we can catch and release off the dock. We usually catch some, but mostly the fish seem disinterested in our little spinners and baited hooks.  I'm wondering if any of you have advice for this kind of kid fishery? Thanks!

Tiny hooks, all my kids used to use size 14 or 16 fly hooks and mussels or bits of sea worms for bait. Watch out with the sea worms as they bite

Thanks for the advice. We've never tried sea worms, and will definitely give it a shot. I've tried mussels, but they're hard to keep on the hook.

I find limpet feet or small bits of squid on a small hook stays on better with all the pecking it gets.  Good Luck!

A lot of our problem is keeping the bait on the hook, so thanks for this. I'm also bringing squid jigs for the first time this year, so this idea might work out for us.

We used small piece of beef. Stays on the hook for a long time

The one time we did it, we used left over breakfast sausage. That worked too!

Catch a Bullhead or whatever and cut pieces from it and make sure you get a piece of the skin into the hook.

Buy a frozen box of squid, cut up small pieces from the tentacles. They don't come off the hook very easily.
