Lifejacket recces...
« on: March 27, 2019, 09:57:39 AM »

Any suggestions for a device to get one compliant with regs for not too much $?

I like the idea of the ones that inflate with a pull cord so they're less bulk, one kinda like a fishing vest that inflates?

What does one need to know about life jackets?

Inflatables will cost 3 times (or more) than a regular/traditional vest.  Really depends on what your intended usage.

Inflatables can be auto or pull cord, again it really depends on when, where and how you will be fishing.

I have four different life jackets/vest for where I will be fishing and the level of safety I perceive the need to be while playing within the regs.

In the ocean/big lakes, I wear an auto inflator at all times when the weather is good.  In cold/rough weather on ocean/big lakes I wear a floater parka/coat in orange high vis.

Small lake fishing in my tinny, I tend to just have a basic traditional vest close by, yes I should wear it at all times, but I don't.

In my kayak, I have a specific kayak vest.  Worn at all times.

This works for me, everyone will have their own preference.  This is not an area to skimp on quality or the right fit for the water.

All four are Mustang.

IIRC you must have one PFD on-board for every passenger.

They should be certified by a proper regulatory body (ie Transport Canada) but PFDs from any legitimate store should be compliant. You can get them starting ~$30.

The inflatable one are great for comfort, but not cheap. You wont find one for <$100 unless a good sale.

Also consider who is wearing an inflatable. If they panic or otherwise dont have the presence of mind to deploy it properly, then a regular foam device would be the better choice.

Yes, if you have little kids or people who are prone to heart attacks or seizures, get one that doesnt need activation to work.

Or if you think that you might hit your head falling out of the boat. Which would seem to be a likely occurrence.

Hitting your head!....exactly.

Or getting shocked when you hit the cold water unexpectedly.    All those surprises may incapacitate a person.

Just an FYI

The self inflating type need the co2 cartridge replaced every 5 years.
Is simple to do and i think $30.00 will cover it.
Its what i use and they are so comfortable .
Even on round guys like myself.
