well with the season winding down lets play the numbers game, how well did you do this year? I got out 10 or so times and ended up with 7, not great but not bad either. ::)

I went too many times to count ::) And I only have 4 hatch Cohos to show for it. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Didn't get to go out near as much as previous years, maybe 7 or 8 times for Ho's. Really slow!! :P

I am just curious. You eat fish that much? Don't get me wrong I am not trying to start a debate here. A buddy and I were talking about this yesterday when we were fishing. Some people think that because the limits are set that they are almost obligated to keep what they catch. I haven't caught that many hatchery this year but if I did I wouldn't bonk that many since most of it would sit in the freezer for quite some time. I could eat salmon at the most once a week Meaning if I had 27 coho that would last me 6 months. Plus their are springs, pinks, chums and sockeye ( which I dint fish for unless I go to the ocean ) So with all those fish their must be some wasted fish. One thing I dint like to see is people catching fish and giving them away. If they would have thought about it while they were fishing and knew at that time that they weren't going to eat it themselves than they could have let the fish go.
Like I said I am not trying to start a debate. If you eat that much salmon than theirs absolutely nothing wrong with that. It just got me thinking in general.

is there not an annual limit on the amount your allowed to keep? Tried looking it up but F'ing DFO's site isnt working.

Not for salmon. The only annual limit is on steelheads.

I eat fish three times a week. I prefer it to beef or chicken. Personally I don't see a problem in giving away some fish. I don't mind giving away some coho to buds who weren't having a good year, or to oldtimers who can't fish anymore due to illness/old age. What you do with the fish you catch is up to you. The only thing that's despicable is a poacher disguised as a sportfisher selling his catch.

54 to the beach and its not even close to being over, I got 2 nice ones last night. Not sure how many hatchery or wild but I still have about a dozen in the freezer. I got my first on September 21st and its been steady fishing since. From blades to roe to jensen eggs to flies I've had a good year.

I guess I have a different perspective than most. I see that the numbers are way down so when I catch a hatchery fish I will only keep it if I plan on eating it. I wont keep fish to give away. People that dont fish can always buy their fish from the local store or fish market.
TS I had a great day yesterday on the fly. Going to get some more on the fly next weekend. Had a 13-15lb coho on yesterday and played it for quite some time. Ended up breaking my 6lb leader right off. Took some nice runs and nearly into my backing a couple times. Gotta love coho on the fly.

Good to hear, my biggest of the year was a hatchery buck in the Vedder pushing 18lbs. Was gonna be broken off thinking another Spring till saw the hook nose. ;D

If you were sitting on a pool of fresh coho would you really want to spook them by playing a spring through the middle of it?

Crappy year for me, I usually record all of my fish in my journal and this year am at 142 give or take a few I didnt mark down.(not sure on the hatcheryvs wild amount but I didnt keep any) last year I did much better with 256 marked down.Ah well, I blame it on not getting out as much due too being a working stiff this year ;D

awful ??? those are good numbers hooked for such a slow year compared to alot of other fishermen (some with none at all)
i've been out on the rivers quite a few times and only hooked about 10, landed 4 (2 wild/2 hatch). both wild on roe and blades for the hatch.

I don't know if there is enough money to buy a shovel big enough!! ;D ;D But let's give him the benefit of the doubt, I'm pretty sure that he meant total fish caught!!!! ;) ;) Probably about 90 chum mixed in there as well!! ;D

BIG fat 0. didnt get out much and when i did, springs and pinks the only fish around, oh well its more enjoyable fishing for steelhead anyway. and there really should be a annual limit on coho NOBODY needs to killl 30 coho.

Their should be an annual limit like we have on Chinook for all species. I love eating fish but I don't need it to survive. I think of it as a treat getting a coho for the BBQ. If I ate coho 3 times a week for 3 months straight I would get sick of it. Some things are meant to be cherished. This coming from a guy who has NOT been skunked ;D

Nope not total fish caught, thats just coho that were landed this season.August 29th was the first fish, than I had about a one week lull of absolutly nothing.

bad year last year i had landed over 100 but didnt keep any of them
thats all for me and how do you get 256 coho :-\thats a alot of fish
in 60days of fishing, to get 256 coho that would be 4 fish a day ;)

I can understand concern for wild fish. But for hatchery why would an annual limit be necessary?

They are not all for me. Some for my parents and kids.
I also give some fish to my neighbors who are retired and on fixed income (Senior Citizen) and cannot fish and cannot afford to buy them from store. They are expensive to buy. I do not know how anyone can speak ill of our Senior Citizen and say that they do not deserve such generosity. :'(
So you can say what you want. I caught them legally and I am allowed to give them to who ever I wish that wants them and would not waste them.

i agree with ryan 100%. though i didn't spend a lot of time on local flows this year for coho, close friends of mine managed 2 to 4 hatchery fish on nearly every outing. these guys fish blades and bait and are hardcore anti flossers. I was starting to get sick of seeing pics and hearing thier reports so i did put some time in at the tail end. for 4 days on the water (1 vedder/3 suicide) i killed 5 hatchery, released 6 wild and 2 boots and lost 4 that appeared to be coho. hooked only 7 chum.
i've been fishing these rivers for over 18 years and even though they change shape, if the coho are there it's only a matter of changing up your presentation and drift choice until they bite.
take the chehalis for example.... a few years ago we would get there long before first light to be the first guys in one of the "glory" holes. That first 20 mins of fishable light was the key, nice little ball of roe with a tiny white yarn and it was coho one after another.... then nothing. that's when the switch came for #3 nickel or gold colorados, fished just below the chums... and bang bite on again for a little while the nothin. that's about when we'd pack up and head er home, limits of hatchery coho all around. we would be leaving the hole by 1 1/2 after sunrise, guys looking at us in disgust because the vast majority of them hadn't caught anything but chums.
Applying this tactic on the chehalis was a sure fire bet as long as the conditions were right and the fish were present. Every flow will be different and of course every years fish numbers will vary but cycling through your gear, especially at first light is key to getting otherwise non biting fish to aggresively turn on.
that's what's worked for me, not saying it's the holy grail of advice though

Wow....you must be out every single day Ryan...good work (or lack of!).
7 times out, a few hooked, none landed. Not enough hours on the rivers, and most of them exploratory....oh well...next year! On to cutties, steel and ice fishing!
