Title: Chilliwack/Vedder sept 27
Post by: Truecast on September 27, 2005, 01:39:43 PM
Did more exploring than fishing today since it was my fist time up that way. Started at the vedder
crossing at 7:00 for a couple of hours... nothing.....then went down to the railway bridge for a couple more hours.....nothing.....then went down to KW bridge just to see what everyone has been talking about and didn't even bother putting my line in the water.

It was good to see some of the spots in person that I've heard about. Now I look forward to finding a few of the lesser known ones.

Fished the whole time with pink roe and float. The water was really clear and I saw allot of Pinks swimming by, but nothing else. Only springs and coho I saw were all held up at KW getting beaten. There were allot of big Springs down there. Hopefully some rain will move them up.

Didn't see anything landed by anyone who was really fishing.
Title: Chilliwack River September 27th
Post by: Rodney on September 27, 2005, 01:43:41 PM
Water is even lower than Sunday now, hopefully the forecasted rain will rise it a bit. I started at first light, managed to hook and kept a chinook jack on the third cast. A few casts later, another chinook jack, which I released. Not long after, one big white chinook came up (really high up! I had my float depth set at 3 feet) and grabbed a big chunk of roe and took me for a ride. That fish eventually peeled just about all the line off before it broke off, taking everything (the Drennan, etc) with it. ::)

From 7:30am to 8:30am, I had a series of bites, which I was very sure were coho. I missed every single one of them. ::) At one point, three drifts, three hits, three times the float went over my head as I set the hook.

Trout Slayer showed up from downstream of me with a nice chinook jack as well. We fished together for awhile before I took off. Here's a photo of our jacks.

So if FA takes my Drennan, can I attempt to snag him and get it back? ;)

FA, you're too late. I phoned Chris already and he is already on his way to snatch that float. ;)

Truecast, I fished several different spots today, all were downstream from Lickman Road. :) Best to find waters where you'll be alone when the water is this clear. Today we basically fished alone so the run wasn't spooked by people walking into the water etc.

Rodney, congrats nice fish! I always fish downstream from lickman rd, but the 20 minute walks get annoying :P but it's really intresting if you wak the water path you can actually see fish in the shades rolling when your crossing a river, theres a place right by this log, but it's hard to fish when your standing in the middle of a river :P but I find that deeper works better.. when I set my float to about 2 feet or  1 and a half i get half the fish then 3 - 3 and a half.. I haven't gotten any big springs yet, im really wanting the coho tho :P oh well... one day...

Well said FishFreak. Too bad some people like to get their jollies from criticizing others.

Testy Testy fish freak, I think it was only the one guy that was serious!!!!! But he did catch the biggest fish of his life, and it would be a hell of a fight for the guy.  So Bruce, hell of a fish buddy, great job.  As for you bone cross, I don't really like what goes on down at the bridge either.  But after a few words that fishfreak and I had, I went down there to see it for myself.  While there were allot of flossers there, not everyone was flossing.  Mind you if I was going to float fish, there wouldn't be my first choice, but that's just me.  Anyhow cut Bruce some slack.  You weren't there, so don't assume.  Speaking from experience here man.  Don't assume, you look like an my friend!!!!! ;D ;D

How much weight are you using to get the wool down to "Floss" this fish Bruce? Nice fish rod and trout slayer! ;D Love the Keith Wilson Bridge Hero Shots ::)
Here we go again........nice cheap shots guys  >:(  Not all people there are using this method.  Why the sarcasm?  The sad thing is this guy doesn't even realize that he's being ridiculed.  Would you say flyfishermen are also flossing?  Was there a couple days ago and saw quite a few fouled hook fish from flyfishing.  Also, are all the float fishing done "flossing" ?  We could go on & on with this topic, but don't think it'll get us anywhere.  My point is.......when KWB is mentioned.........automatically you think BB, "flossing", "snagging".  I agree this is not a way to fish and has to stop, but don't agree about putting others down when they're just proud of posting a nice fish they caught.  No wonder why others here don't like to post fishing reports......maybe afraid of being bashed.  Nice fish Bruce, Rodney, & TroutSlayer!

I don't know, it happens, when a huge wave of fish come, it is easy even to snag a fish with a float, when your reeling in, its very easy, bottom bounce, floss, call it what you want, we all snag fish, we dont mean to, I personally find bottom bouncing a much more intresting way of fishing, because you feel those rocks/or sand and you wonder, is it a fish, or just a rock? haha :D

I don't know.. but since when do people have to tell YOU how to fish? as long as you use common sense, stay clean, and fish fairly, its all good! I really dislike people that call others idiots just because they dont fish the same way everyones else does!

btw, thx big! my dad got me into fishing mostly :)

Today was great out there. Lot's of jack springs landed, and tonnes of lost coho but did manage to land a beauty wild. Which brings my total to 3 coho landed this season. Highlight of the day, just before dark I hooked a TANK Coho, was a huge northern of about 18-20lbs, jumped right for me then behind and popped off after it revealed its identity. :-\ Oh well, gonna get that one back. ;)

Do not pray for too much rain as you know what happens then, fish come in like gangbusters and all head to the hatchery.

Even though the water is low now the fish do move up river be it slowly. Saying that some rain will be good as it will move them out of holding area's like the Keith Wilson Bridge.

This happens every year. Water gets a bit low, people pray for rain as they are not catching coho. When the rain comes, the water gets high, the fish just shoot straight up to the hatchery.

Last year, I was lucky enough to get into a couple of fish on September 10th. Overnight, it rained heavily and by the morning of September 11th, the river was too muddy to catch fish. The fishing was poor for at least a week as most coho just ended up heading straight into the hatchery and upper river.

You can still successfully catch coho under low and clear water conditions, just have to walk more, and fish harder.

I don't think that it will be as muddy as you guys think!!!!  I have walked a lot of the river this year and we no longer have to worry about one of the clay banks, and even if the river does get a bit dirty, the river seems to be clearing up rather quickly the last year or so.  The rain is also supposed to turn to showers for Friday and Saturday.  So I think that we will be fine.  Also with the ground being so dry, it is going to soak up a lot of water.  Maybe I should have kept that to myself to keep some people off the river for the weekend. ;D ;D But I really doubt that would have worked anyways!!!! ;) ;)

Eddie I don't fish the gong show either, there are still some places that don't get that much pressure.  That is where I usually fish.  With more water coming I already have a few more ideas that I looked at last weekend.  But one never knows if these spots will produce till they try!!!!

The river blew out in july so I wouldn't count your chickens before they're hatched. Plus, the problem now isn't the main vedder, its Slesse creek.

Hey fish people are talking about the Vedder because that is what this post is about.  People do talk about the Chehalis as well!!!!  In a month from now, the Chehalis is all we will be talking about, because that is when that river will be producing.  Right now it is not, the Vedder is, so everone talks about the Vedder.  The Squamish is closed, and none of the other rivers are producing that well.  If they were then they would be discussed as well!!!! ;) ;D

How can they rain not spread out the fish? they are trapped under the KWL bridge right now after that its a maze of ripples to a few pools.

I'm perplexed by the comments on high water.  Not chocolate brown water, but the water coming up a bit will bring the fishing up from maybe 1-2 coho being hooked to lots of aggressive unspooked fish hammering every drift.

Sterling I don't remember the river being blown in July at all, and I was there alot. It was high thats all. Blown means choclate milk colour. And this was the best red spring season in years.

Chirs, it definitly blew out one day cause I remeber driving out there only to see it was blown. Then I decided to drive to the upper river in the hopes that it was just the clay banks. Nope, it was Slesse.
