Title: Seminars!
Post by: Rodney on December 11, 2005, 10:40:23 AM
STS Guiding Service and Hub Sports are hosting a series of seminars about float fishing for steelhead and salmon. Click here for more information. (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishy_news/051211-1.html)

STS Guiding Service is also hosting a series of jet boating seminars on the Fraser River. Click here for more information. (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishy_news/051211.html)

In January, the Fraser Valley Boat and Sportsmen's Show (http://www.reel-shows.com/) will be releasing its seminar schedule. There will be a list of seminars over three days hosted by very experienced anglers such as Brian Chan and Vic Carrao. An updated floor plan (http://www.reel-shows.com/floorplan.pdf) of the 2006 show on March 3rd to 5th was just released several days ago. New next year will be a large tent located on the north side, which will feature an educational section including Pathway to Fishing, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Sportfishing Institute of BC and Kids Fly Tying Workshop. For businesses that are still interested in exhibiting at the show, I have been informed by the organizer that only a few booths are still available. 2005's show drew over 30,000 visitors, we can expect attendance to be much higher at next year's show.

Lots of learning opportunities available in the next several months.

I would say that you should go out with some people that know there stuff, and save your money.  The seminars will show you a few things about catching the fish, but they won't show you the most important thing, where to catch the fish.  You already know how to catch them, you just need to spend more time on the river and learn how to fish many different types of water!!

Didn't you take the seminar with Peter last year? Why are you taking it again? Both seminars are being taught by knowledgable local anglers, so it would be nice to try out the other one if you have already done Fred's seminar.

Perhaps we should have a small gathering out on the river. Some of the more seasoned anglers can team up with some of the green horns to show them some of the ropes.

Here's a good one I learned from a forum member here. When fishing roe for steelies, thread a single jensen egg on your line above the roe, that way if a steelie hits and some how steals your bait without being hooked theirs a chance that they will attack a second time.

Already knew that one!!! ;D ;D But sometimes, I substitute a small gooey bob for the jensen egg and throw in some scented wool as well!!

I like to attach very thin tufts of wool to certain baits. I feel that it can get caught up on the fishes teeth and give you a slightly longer window to set the hook before the fish spits the hook. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but if you run wool over a fishes teeth it does get caught up fairly well.

Good tricks.  I took the stealhead course from sts guides (guy with a huge mustach) a few years ago.  It was pretty good, but I think they should offer one for people who know how to tie knots and cast  ;)  They showed us how to make up nice wool ties and rubber worm rigs, and differnt blades for different weather conditions (that was actually a very good tip), and a few tricks about how to set up your weight so you can ditch the weight if you get snagged ect...

and then on the river we did hit some pretty nice runs. Lots of emphasis on fishing correctly and looking for water that would hold fish.  So I would reccomend it if you are pretty new to fishing, or are unsure about where to fish on a given run then go take the course. otherwise it would be good just to go out and fish.

Since I took that course, I have improved my outing to fish hooked ratio.  but I never had the same kind of luck as the first time when I was 8 and outfished all the old pros (they probably put me onto fish thought)

Couldn't agree more!
Fishing is all about experience and practise not note taking.
OK if you want to help fatten those people's bottom line in the off season that's your biz......

My opinion is that the course is good for those that are absolutely new to the world of steelheading. Otherwise follow Big Steel's advice and go with someone who knows what they are doing.

Actually pretty much every local fishing website has an annual fishing getogether, its not just them. Besides, I'm sure you could learn a thing or two from something like this.

I don't think anyone should expect to see a fish at these seminars. If only that would happen everytime. ;D Taking it again is not a bad idea, but if it is the same seminar then the material he goes through will probably be the same as last year's. Make sure you ask lots of questions in that case, you will learn more from that. My recommendation would still be to try out a different instructor, as they differ in experience, skill, preference of waters etc.

The courses are intended for people who are new to fishing, not just to steelhead fishing. There are many on the forum who are just getting into river fishing this year, this would be a good one to sign up for. :)

Vic usually does a couple of salmon or sturgeon fishing seminars at Tradex every year, and he does a very good job on them.

If any one is offering I would love to go steelheading with a few vetererns and pick up a few tips. This will be my 3rd year...1st year hooked and long line relaesed a beauty, last year completely skunked. Went up yesterday by lickman rd and the only thing I saw were ugly chums splashing around and a guy accross the river caught this feisty rainbow about 15".
If anyone planning to go please let me know @ tim@mostad.ca

Thanks and best of luck to all
