Post by: salmonrook on November 28, 2021, 12:18:14 PM
Hey Folks
Just wanting an opinion on this spawned out salmon I observed on a Little Campbell tributary
I think its male and too small to be a  full grown Chinook , its wild as seen by the Adipose fin in place

I'd say that is a female coho - but I have been wrong before!

def a chinook, its missing the classic hooked nose for it to be a coho

females don't develop that kyped beak.

I thought female because of the size and then chinook because of the spots
I thought coho was less spotted or not at all
I did find a the remains of a chum same location but that was easier because it had teeth

100% spawned out female coho salmon. It has white gums and the spots are small where  chinook spots are generally  "bigger" and broader. The lack of kype is not a good indicator as some stocks of coho females have quite large kypes. I have literally spawned thousand of Squamish coho over the years and having a kype on a female Squamish coho is very common especially on Cheakamus and upper Squamish fish.

see...wrong again!

*************

worth noting that not all coho males develop much of a kype...jacks and smaller adult males in particular. I have seen a jack coho with a developed kype such as one sees on"Northerns" for example.

But I am likely wrong again.  ::)
