where have all the smelt gone....
« on: August 20, 2006, 01:22:37 PM »

Just a quick interesting point... in the past my dad has gone fishing for smelt and usually had no problems getting a couple hundred smelt on a outing.... he has gone the last 2 nights and hasnet been able to get more than 20 fish... are the rest of you seeing this aswell... To be honest with you i dont really like eating the smelt but i think this could be a cause for concern if nobody is catching smelt.. he has asked his friends and they say the same thing that they are catching about 20 per night... hmmmm

your thoughts..

The smelt population has decreased noticeably the past few years. Where was your dad fishing last night ?

I think it is a trend for some smaller fish like the Pacific Tom Cod. They just disappear mysteriously in the last few years. Global warming causing them to shift their spawning ground up north???

Took a little stroll. The fishermen I talked to had an average of 1/2 bucket, not great but better than your dad ;D There's always next weekend.

Today's high tide was 4:00pm.  Is it better to smelt netting 2~3 hours before high tide, or before sunset is better? (tide or time of day more of a factor)

Thank you

Next week's evening high-tides will be better. Darkness gives them the cover to get near shore.
