I started fishing the chilliwack vedder in 1975.I got to know a few of the locals in Fred's coffee shop. They told me to go down to Peach road and cast behind the big stump in middle of river. When I came back to the coffee shop about an hour later were they ever surprised to see a 14lb. buck in the back of my truck.Nov.14.

What the hell? What are the odds of that? lol
I think you should have bought a 6/49 that day instead.

2 steelhead one year on the vedder before October 15, and one on the Chehalis on October 17.  This is over a 10 year period.  I did not mistake the fish either.  I am a Washington State habitat biologist and often fish with US Fish and Wildlife enforcement agents and hatchery personell.

December 2, 2000 - Chehalis River.  It was a hatchery buck of about 12 lbs - released.  I've got the photo framed along with the fly that caught the fish... ;)

Earliest winter run I have seen landed on the Vedder is Oct 12, sometime in the early 80's.  Earliest I have hooked a Vedder steelhead was Nov 14, 1966   .... earliest I have landed a Vedder steelhead is Dec 1, 1974.

I like your mind for details Dave. Would love to read your journal

Nope, not me.  I caught one and never took it out of the water.  Just reached down and unhooked it.  My buddy caught one about 150 yards downstream of me the next day.  Both were caught in the vicinity of the campground.  The Chehalis fish was caught in the pool above the bridge.  All 3 were caught using different methods.

Mine was on Dec. 27th last year, but I ususally don't start fishing for them until the Boxing Day Derby.  Can't wait for Steelhead...

Thanks Clarki but trust me, it's not my mind  :D   I have kept a steady fishing diary now for about 30 years and had a few others before then (that are now unfortunately lost).
I have also fished with/hang out with pretty much the same people for 40-45 years so we jog each others memories.  A common thought nowadays is there were always lots of late Nov -Dec Vedder steelhead back in the 60's and 70's  ... not so.  I recall a few years when they didn't show till January ( but that's misleading as well because there were a lot fewer anglers then)

Further, us oldtimers still talk about that November run of fish in 1966 - bigguns and lot's of em ;)
