Wildlife poaching unmonitored in B.C., scientist says

From todays Vancouver Sun


"A University of B.C. scientist says it's possible that illegal hunting may have contributed to the sharp decline of mountain caribou in the province, but no one will ever know that because B.C. fails to monitor poaching levels in any meaningful way."


The article goes on to say that Abilone here in BC have not been monitored for years as well and are endangered. ALso has some stats on the BC Liberals slashing conservation officers and closing eight CO offices in BC. I guess Barry Penner should read the paper to stay on top of changes in protection issues.

My favorite part:
"Which means, says Arcese, that unlike Tanzania where careful records of illegal hunting activities are kept, no one in BC knows how many species might be under severe pressure because of poaching" "It's all a guess"

Well who'd a thought we already went third world in monitoring are resources. The wildlife is self monitoring here in BC, yahoo.

i'm hard of hearing anyways.... yelling is o.k. ;D

yup..... 3rd world conservation at it's best....... we can afford stupid olympics for whistler...... and safe injection sites for drug fiends..... but monitor and enforce poaching laws..... nah...

hey.... i wonder if our next b.c. premier will be a convicted felon.... drunk driving is still a felony right??? oh ya.. and so is poaching  :o  ::)  ???
