You should have added both. I use both. It depends on which flow and also the mood I am in. If I want to get in more casts I will bring my baitcaster. If I want the fun I will use my pin. You should also have included fly. I bet I will be using my flyrod atleast 75% of the time this year as I need to get that monkey off my back of never catching one on the fly.

Common, where is the flyrod option... You haven't lived until you can catch a winter run steelhead on a fly.

Cheers,
Nicole

I've never really done much float fishing with a baitcaster. I've landed steel on the fly and on the pin. that's it.

Count me in as another calcutta fan. I enjoy being able to get in more casts in a day and being able cast across the river far more than having a slightly less drag free drift.

only one reel to choose, the baitcaster is the most versatile.

I have to agree with Nicole - where is the fly rod option?  I haven't fished steelhead before, but I do fly fish and can't wait for the time to try to catch one with my flyrod. ;D

i myself like catching steelhead any way i can.

i always take my fly rod but i feel more confident fishing my favourite river (thompson) with a nice calcutta reel and custom loomis rod (drift fishing with shrimp/ghost shrimp and roe)

interestingly enough i was told that the fly rod i always take is actually a really good center pin float rod so i might try it out sometime. 12ft fenwick custom made by bill lynch. it has a butt attachment for float fishing but is a long single hander.

I bought a bait caster b/c of the shame I felt after 17 trips on the water with no luck on the fly.  You can't say I didn't try!  I would like to catch my first steelie, then I might be willing to go back to the fly.

I think I did things backwards.  i started with flyfishing, then discovered the other types of fishing....   that is, other than chucking spoons for pike and walley as a kid.
