Fish for the Future, July 9th 2011
« on: June 07, 2011, 02:09:27 PM »

Hi all,

Originally, I had intended to cancel this year's Fish for the Future because of all the new hassles that I had to go through with the city (every year there's always a new surprise. This year is a "special event tent fee" and proving that the tents are heat resistant) but it looks like we are going to go ahead with it after all.

The event will be on July 9th, at No. 2 Road Pier in Steveston once again. It takes place from 10am to 2pm (last year it was to 3pm, which was a bit too long). The format will be the same. We'll have a few tents set up, kids can come and fish for free. They can put their fish in aquariums to observe them before releasing. DFO officers will be on site to answer questions. Go Fish BC will be on site to do learn to fish sessions.

We'll have a fly tying tent again if I get enough volunteers for it. Does anyone here want to come out again? :) We'll also need a couple of people for fly casting tutorials if anyone wants to do that.

We also need a few extra bodies to come at 8:30am for setting up the event.

In case anyone who does not know what Fish for the Future is, here is the website (I know, the top graphic has not been changed, but will soon): http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fftf

Please let me know by either leaving a message here, or send me an email (info@fishingwithrod.com).

I look forward to see some of you again.

You can be dock master this year  ;D

I am heading off for a Scout Jamboree on the sunshine coast that day with my troop, so I won't be able to make it this year.  Have fun guys!

You should still come and be swarmed by 300 kids, then catch the ferry to Sunshine Coast afterward to meet up with the scouts that night. It'd make a perfect day. ;D

Dave.

Thanks! We'll be in touch a week or so before the event. :)

Back to the top. Still need quite a few volunteers as most regulars are unable to make it this year.

Hey Rodney,

I was initially going to help out, but it turns out that I have another commitment the day of. Sorry about that. I was looking forward to tallying Staghorn after Staghorn after Staghorn after... ;D

Best of luck with the event this year. I hope I'll be able to attend next time around.

We are getting closer to the event and looks like everything is coming together finally. Here's a preview on what you can expect this year.

Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will be attending once again and supplying fishing rods for kids to borrow. We'll have volunteers to help out on the pier, to make sure all the kids are fishing safely and catching fish. Hopefully, we will see some sculpin, pikeminnow, peamouth chub, starry flounder, largescale sucker, shiner perch, bull trout and possibly American shad and a few other estuary species.

Everyone will have a chance to bring their fish to the aquariums in a bucket so they can be viewed before being released back into the Fraser River.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada from Steveston will also be attending this year, so if you have questions on regulations, where you can and cannot fish, etc, this is your chance to ask.

Seymour Salmonid Society will be bringing some live juvenile coho salmon for their display once again.

Free juvenile saltwater fishing licences will be available on site for kids under the age of 16.

There'll be free flycasting and tying lessons available. Although these are mostly for kids, adults are welcome to join in too.
