As a result of significant increases in Fraser pink sun size during this week
pink directed fishing opportunities with non-retention of sockeye are planned
in some areas.

If the river is shut down to protect sockeye, shouldn't the pink run size be completely irrelevant in terms of allowing an opening?

I agree there is way too much politics based in these opening/non opening decisions.  It's a shame west coast salmon stocks are and have been completely mismanaged.  It's far too easy for them to just shut down recreational fisheries instead of dealing with real problems such as habitat degredation, pollution, ocean factors, fish farms etc... in the end recreational fishers will be the ones to suffer when other factors will continue to be the real cause to salmon's decline.
It may be a stretch but I can't help feeling salmon are being deliberately mismanaged.

No notices yet, but CBC is paraphrasing a DFO Regional Salmon Manager:

"He said a recreational fishery allowing the retention of pink, chinook and chum will also take place in the tidal portion of the Fraser River below Mission, B.C., but above the city the fishery will allow the retention only of pink and chum."

Salmon don't need to be managed. It's the humans that want to sell and eat them that need to be managed.

From Jason Tonelli and the crew at Pacific Angler in their weekly Friday Fishing Report:

"Bryce and I (JT) were on the phone with DFO yesterday and they were literally working on the paperwork to open up the Fraser to fishing for pink salmon today [Friday]."

Still nothing - but keep your eyes peeled!

DFO is very aware that people prfer to fish for pinks on warm, sunny days  I'm pretty sure when the clouds they will open up pinks.
