Please educate me. What function do seals have in local waters? They provide food for whales. What negative impact would a moderate culling of seals have on the ecosystem. I can see possible positive impacts in more herring, smelts and salmon. What negative impact could this have other than a massive public outcry of sympathy. Very interested to hear a different perspective.

they are a vital part of our ecosystem just like the salmon, just like the whales, and all other marine life.
they are a pain for fisherman. but hey... its not much different than getting beaked on by other fisherman.

seals are a protected marine mammal in the u.s.a., in canada they can be culled by order of dfo ,like in new foundland and n.w.t. but in b.c. the protest would be huge so the population grows bigger and bigger. commercial fishermen used to pop them off in the old days.now we have to pu up with them stealing hooked salmon.

I have noticed seals in False Creek for the past couple of weeks. Just wondering if they are chasing food (salmon, herring, smelt). anyone?
