Smelt jigging
« on: February 15, 2007, 11:18:20 AM »

I want to try something different. Need help in making a smelt jig. What size and color of hook is best to jig smelt of the docks? How far apart should the hooks be placed?

Why not try a herring jig ? It will save you alot of work. They're only a few bucks at Army and Navy.

Now dont quote me on this (so check the regs yourself)  but I think you are allowed to jig ie SNAG herring, smelts etc... I used to snag squid by the bucket full down in cowichan bay when I was a kid, they made great cheap bait and tasted dam fine too!  I tied 8 or so triple hooks in a row (over 5 feet of line) with a banana weight on the bottom, it worked like a charm.  I bought a bulk pack of eagle claws that would be about as round as a dime.  We also jigged some herring that way too.  the smaller hooks were definitely better as they didnt rip the flesh as badly.  Dont know which method would be more successful but I think you have a long tiome to plan it as I think the smelts run in the summer.

Oh ya, we put the rigs together with surgeon loops and then we would attached the hook to the loop.  If you arent going to snag them then spend a couple of bucks and buy a herring jig...defiitely worth the money.

If you really want smelts, catch them with a net.

Hmm Gooey what make you think jigging for herring is snagging them?  Those small piece of skin is a krill similate, just like fly.

I used to jig herring in the Gorge in Victoria when I was younger.  Was a good way to spend the easter break from school.  Anyone still know if there is a decent run?
