Post by: Trout_Bum on September 12, 2012, 06:57:44 PM
Could any one tell me any hike in lakes in The Lower Mainland that also have good fishing and have good scenery (not looking for any secret spots just looking for a good hike and fish)

Lindeman is really nice, but Garibaldi is something I've always wanted to do. I've heard the lake is beautiful and some of my friends have caught some big trout there.

Yup it's really nice up there! Not too bad of a hike in either, I'd say 3 hours or so for most people

Biggest fish are in Pearce lake which is about the same as hiking up to Garibaldi just shorter and steeper. But hey you want big fish you have to pay the piper. Biggest I've seen out of Pearce is about 3 lbs. Gari about 1.5lbs.

Do you mean Pierce lake, as in Upper and Lower Pierce lake by Mt. MacFarlane, or is this a completely different lake?

Yes I used the wrong spelling for the lake. I would go up for the day fishing and bring a inflatable boat. But that didn't really help because the best fishing was were the creek from the lake above came into the lake. Sinking line and egg imitation was worked the best. I never brought the boat back up there after we found that out. We even went ice fishing up there once. We ended up in a deep hole we shoveled out to get past the 8 feet of snow to where the ice was. Would not do that again but thankfully we carried lots of beer along for the overnighter. Only one small one caught after all the effort.

And if you're looking for an overnighter, head all the way up to Flora Lake (same area as Greendrop and Lindeman).  Generally small fish, but lots of them.  Amazing scenery, brutal hike though...

Yup, tough lake to fish if you don't know what you re doing, but if you do, lots of fish to be had. Lots of big drop offs and dead heads.

Deek Lake, Porteau Cove at the end of the Howe Sound Crest Trail has lots of willing biters as well. Pretty small fish though. It's pretty close to Vancouver.
The only other lake I've been to is Joffre. Great camping, and a couple of the fish I caught were decent size.

Great thread, I've had no idea Garibaldi has fish in it. Pretty mellow hike up to the lake. I went up to Panorama Ridge when I camped there, it was well worth the effort.

If anyone is down for an overnighter (preferably mid-week) to any alpine lakes send me an email. May as well take advantage of the last bit of summer. I'm set with my one man tent. I can take care of the food/dinner/breakfast/cookset stove, first aid kit etc.

I don't want bass in any of the lakes up in the mountains. I thought it might be a joke but you never know.

It was a joke. Would be too hard for someone to bother putting bass into and have hike up there to go fishing for them.

Driftwood Bay on Garibaldi lake is the good hike-in for the young and fit.    Follow an unmarked track down on the east side of Mimulous Creek from the Black Tusk meadows.   Only room for a few fishers.

Fished there a few times. Even carried an inflatible boat a couple times.

Don't expect:

a. huge fish
b. huge action

But it is a great place scenic wise. When the blueberrys are out it can be really good too. You probably want a beer along for the hike in. My expierence fishing there might not be what others have had. I heard of people flying in there for the fishing but to me it was not that great. Garibaldi is more scenic and has bigger fish. But hey why not try as many hike in lakes as you can. Mamquam lake is really good but it's like a 22 k march in. Unreal fishing with a buzz bomb there for some reason if you go.

Hiked in there some years back in early summer carrying an inflatable.   The trail was in poor condition making it a rough trip and the weather was marginal.  I hiked too fast with the result I was soaked and exhausted when I got there.  After resting and a snack i recovered enough to try the fishing.   The lake was open where the trail arrives but still frozen further out.   Many starving fish about 6 inches long, all head an no body.   I retraced my steps down to Widgeon Creek and the tide had gone way out so I had to drag my boat across the mud for quite a long way to get back to the Harrison.   Never been so tired in my life.   Just about couldn't put the cartopper up on the vehicle.

I had some hiking acquaintances who went in there and passed some fellows heavily burdened with float tubes etc. on the trail.    Later while eating lunch at the lake they heard the tubers huffing and puffing up the last steep pitch below them before the lake came into view for the tubers.   They gave them a cheery greeting and advised that the good news was that they were almost there, the bad news was that the lake was still frozen solid.

I don't play by the rules :) That lake is too far to carry an inflatible into, with the beer I need for a overnight trip. Just brought a selection of lures and a 10 foot rod to get way out there. Just happened to bring my usual buzzbomb I use for salmon fishing because it casts a mile. Thing worked unreal soon as it hit the water fish on. I went to the shallow end and waded out casted reeled in as fast as I could and there were like 20 fish chasing it right to when they saw me. :)
