Title: Fishing Kayak
Post by: jwilliamson on March 16, 2015, 12:25:11 PM
Hi All,
I am thinking about getting a fishing kayak for lakes around Vancouver.
I have used a pontoon boat before and although fun, I would like something a bit quicker and less setup.
Any suggestions on something basic but will get me going?
Thanks
JOE

If you're poor like me, wait for a sale at Canadian Tire, buy a cheap non fishing kayak, then kit it out with rod holders and paddle holders. Or buy used.

I have a couple of Hobie Kayaks a Revolution 11 and a Sport, I highly recommend them but they are expensive especially with our low dollar. I use mine for lakes and salt water.

I bought a small, hard shell, sit-in kayak from CanTire at the end of last summer.
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/pelican-pursuit-80x-sit-in-kayak-8-ft-0798256p.html#.VQdPUTEg8v4

The kayak is 8 ft long and has a weight limit around 200lbs.
I am around 200 lbs and I found the boat very unstable - moved side to side a lot.

A couple of months later, I got a great deal on an Aquaglide inflatable kayak.

The one I got is the "Dechutes 2" - took it 3 or 4KM off-shore in the ocean in Mexico and it felt very stable.

Aquaglide also makes a special "fishing kayak".

It has Scotty mounts and the hull is puncture-proof.

Check Sun Dolphin kayaks out in the US - fully outfitted from Walmart, the 10' is $299 (US of course) and the 12' is $449 - those are the sit on... the sit in are a tad more....  I've never used one, but read a lot on them and for the price, sounds like they are not too shabby.

I just bought a CT Sonic 80X sit on top, also checked the Riot Escape 9 for $100 more. A dealer in Surrey is selling the Escape 9 for $399 boat show price, a pretty good deal

you could try posting on a kayak forum as well, like WCP....

Sit on's are far more comfortable and usable.... I have both and would only look at sit on's with a sit in as a last resort... especially if buying new Or spendin a bunch of cash!  Also a rudder or keel really helps too. My cheap sit in needs one if trolling as it turns when I stop padding... or wind, lol

I recommend doing some research before buying the Canadian Tire or Costco Kayaks. Pelican kayaks don't have adequate flotation should you ever capsize them. Seats are also a very important part of a kayak, big difference in comfort and stability between different kayaks.

I work at Western Canoe Kayak in Abbotsford and we have demo days where you can come and try out fishing kayaks. We have over 20 fishing specific models in stock. Our staff actually fish and want to talk fishing kayaks. Tell us where you fish and what you fish for and we will help you choose the right kayak.

We have pedal powered kayaks so you're hands free, we have kayaks to stand in if you fly cast, kayaks with Minkota electric trolling motors, inflatable kayaks, thermal formed light weight fishing kayaks, get the idea?

Call the store and ask for Ryan, 1-866-644-8111 or email me with specific questions: ryan (at) westerncanoekayak.com

Maybe we should arrange a special Fishingwthrod.com demo day?

You might be on to something here.
I find hardshells tippy and clumsy.

Going to the demo days was awesome! Totally helped me confirm my well researched pick and a lot of fun!

Hey Ryan,  ever thought about a demo day in van? Abby is a bit of a drive for some I bet although totally worth it!

Hey Doja, what did you end up getting? Glad you enjoyed the demo day. We have run some demo days in Vancouver before and probably will again this year. We always attend the MEC Paddle Fest at Jericho Beach every year.

Hey Ryan,  bought a 14' tarpon, have taken to the ocean ( real ocean, not van, lol ) and up small rivers such as the alloutte and lots of lakes! Great boat for me!

Going to keep an eye out for the Vancouver one as it was fun trying the different boats and how they handled... any idea when abouts?

Well my Income Tax Return was good to me so went out to Western and picked up a Jackson Coosa.
I think I might break it in this weekend if the weather holds.

The girlfriend and I love our fishing kayaks that we bought from Western Canoe and Kayak last November.

She got the Tarpon 120.

I got the Jackson Cuda 12.

Hers is faster and smoother to paddle.

Mine is much more stable - I can stand up and flycast from it.

The demo days are ideal, they allow you to try a lot of the different options and see what "feels" best for you! Glad some of you made it out and gave 'em a try.

Ya...  I don't recommend standing in a tarpon...  Tried it once...  Dumb idea,  lol.

That said you CAN put outriggers on to make more stable...  And still retain the speed aspect of a narrow width. Lots of cool ideas guys on YouTube have done!
