ugly stick makes a great shore/surf rod for casting large weights from shore...plus it has the backbone to fight a big fish, plus those rods never break!  ;D

I'd agree with Mike. I use to shore fish sturgeon and the crew I fished with all used fibreglass ugly sticks. They are around 13' (I think) and it really aides in casting further. I feel a Shimano Technium would be a little short for long distance casting. I've seen sturgeon up to 7.5 feet being landed with ugly sticks, they are champs. And if you think dropping anchor and landing a 7.5 foot sturgeon is hard, try landing one from a dock where you can't chase after it.
