Title: Homemade Lures
Post by: Dude on June 23, 2017, 01:15:40 PM
Most of us have tried or thought about making our own lures lets face it LOL  8)
lets see some pics of what everyone has made.
I am starting to make some out of rebar jigs for bottom fishing.
Pictures to follow shortly.

Couple samples of some very cheap and ugly lures. They look brutal but have put many trout in the boat over the years. Started making these about 20 years ago when money was tight. Top one is about 10 years old and has gone through a few hooks and new line over the years. Bottom is about 3-4 years old.

Those will be great for pink season.
Eh?? And how? I've seen pinks chase some interesting offerings - but no chance for these - plus they are far from legal.

Is this a joke and I missed something (was expecting to see Reiber's name as the OP)? I'd love to see you justify these to a CO. I applaud creativity when it produces positive and ethical outcomes, but I would assume these are nothing but a snagging tool as ChumWhisperer was insinuating.

Freshwater
IT IS UNLAWFUL TO....
Use barbed hooks or a hook with more than one point in any
river, stream, creek or slough in B.C. (Note: the use of barbed
hooks or hooks with more than one point is permitted in lakes,
unless noted in the Regional Water-Specific Tables)

Saltwater
It is illegal to do the following:
• fish for salmon, trout, char or steelhead with a barbed hook, including within the
tidal portions of any stream (such as the Fraser River and Skeena River)
• angle with a fishing line that has more than one hook, artificial lure or
artificial fly attached except:
- in the tidal waters of the Fraser River, where you can attach two hooks,
artificial lures or artificial flies to a bar rig
- in tidal waters, where you can attach any number of hooks to a fishing
line if using the hooks in combination to hold a single piece of bait
- in tidal waters, where you can attach any number of hooks to a fishing
line if fishing for herring, mackerel, northern anchovy, Pacific sand lance,
Pacific sardine or squid

Hey, hey --- I'm a little offended by that. You spelled my name incorrectly.  ;D

Anywaya, the hooks need to be set back a little more to be more effective and you don't need the zap strap. The bucktail jigs we used to use in the Columbia below the Hugh Kenlyside Dam, and up in the narrows during low water, for Bull Trout had those split hooks and never pulled apart.

Rebar lure - not Rieber's lure.

Maybe you could make a bunch of those and sell them at the K.W. Bridge this pink season. "Blue Raker"

Thanks! It was made from 1/8" thick copper sheet and I hammered it out on a stake. Later, I polished it smooth with a belt sander, some sandpaper and polishing compound. The final weight is 14g.

Have you fished it yet? I give you credit man sometimes I'm too lazy to put them together with bought components let alone hammer out a spoon.

I haven't fished it yet, mainly because I rarely get the chance to fish and I'm afraid of losing them. I made it just because I was bored and wanted to see whether or not I could make something like that

Send me a couple and I'll happy to test it out for you. :)

I would but they take me around 2-3 hours to make one, and I don't really have that kind of time.

Spoon looks neat.  Nicely done.

The spinner though...no clevis for the blade?

I was wondering the same thing. How much does the lack of a clevis affect the spinning?

By the way here are some of my homemade lures:

Update on my spoon...
Earlier this week, I went to the vedder for an afternoon, my first trip of this season. Nobody was catching anything in the part of the run that we were fishing so I decided to slowly move towards the tailout while casting the spoon. Around 30m down from where I was fishing, I caught this guy...

IMHO, more satisfying than catching fish on a self-tied fly.

Edit: it seems that photobucket is still uncooperative so the photo of the fish can be found on my Instagram: @epikwinner
