Blisters on Sockeye
« on: August 31, 2014, 12:22:04 AM »

Saw someone catch this and managed to snap a pic. There were also a few others swimming aimlessly that also seemed to have these blisters on them.

I know there are plenty of fish nerds on this site. Anybody know what might be infecting this fish?

They look like lamprey wounds to me.
I see the Sun just did an article on it.

Lamprey scars has my vote. I have caught 3 socks in the chuck with lamprey's attached to them.

Yes that just might be it. Caught one of those ugly lamprey bastards on a Spoon in the Thompson last November. Next time I won't throw it back.

Bahaha! No doubt.

Lamprey bites seems about right. Matches the scar on Jeremy's neck in one of the crazier episodes of River Monsters where he attached one to his jugular.  http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/river-monsters/videos/a-kiss-of-death-lamprey-sucks-jeremys-blood.htm

He mentions in this episode that many FN Chiefs would take a meal of Lamprey over Salmon any day. Anyone tried it?

Lamprey eels. One fish I landed had 4 stuck to him and another chasing him down next to the boat. I use them for sturgeon so they are a bonus catch.  Here's a few from our last trip.

Wow. They seem to have good/bad years on the chuck - like coyotes to rabbits - but I have never heard of them in the Thompson. And biting a spoon? That's incredulous.

I used too many for bait and could never eat Eel but they are very popular with many people.
The Dutch and Japanese come to mind.

Lamprey and eel are two completely different species.
