Title: Riviera Maya, Mexico suggestions
Post by: bigsnag on February 23, 2013, 10:43:52 AM
Heading to H10 Ocean Coral TURQUESA resort in Puerto Morales in May,anyone have tips on the Mexican fishing  regulations ie:licenses etc. I'll be taking my 5wt switch rod for surf fishing and it should handle casting in the wind better.

I plan on using Clousers in chartreuse and pink as general fly choices. Anyone's experiences and suggestions are greatly appreciated.   :)

Mexico only requires license for fishing from a boat, not from shore.

:) Good news, glad I was looking through the forum today.

I'm headed to the Mayan Riviera on the 19th, might take a rod with me knowing this.

It does state no license required to fish from land. I did read on a couple of forums that it was a good idea to have  a licence anyway to avoid hassels aka bribesfrom Federales that do beach patrol.

Sitting at the beach at the moment, decided to write a little report from the morning. Hooked 7 fish in about an hour and a half of fishing from the beaches this morning. A mix of mackerel (3-7 pounds), needle fish (1-4 pounds,), a few small jacks and even a few barracuda (2-8) pounds. All you really need is a spinning rod, matching reel, 10 or 12 pound test mainline and a box of spoons, plugs and Rapalas. Most fish were caught in a big Gibbs Croc. Just cast from the beaces where there are little waves and there is a change in the ocean floor, like structure, rocks and reefs and you will catch fish. Even killed a mackerel for this evenings dinner. If you keep any fish, ask your chef to prepare it for you. Gonna go out ever morning after a little run before the masses come out.

Cheers!

Took the 4wt out this evening, caught a few jacks and even managed my first ever bonefish! All on minnow patterns, downside is that the needle fish really tore up a few of my favourite flies.

awesome. I'm bringing a few gear rods down to belize as well so the wife can use them.  but its great news to hear you've had success and it was relatively easy.

did you bring the rappalas down with you?

Yes I have had them since my Hawaii trip. Only thing is you might wanna bring some steel leaders because the barracuda will chew through everything if you miss the hookset and let your lure angle itself so that the line hits the teeth.

Flew back home last night. I will see if I can put up pictures tonight. I released all of the barracuda so I would not know. Fished a few more times but my spinning real got really messed up from the salt water so another thing is to bring a reserve and wash everything out really well. Hooked something big on the last day, it felt like it was around 15 pounds. Reel buckled and the hook straightened after about 10 minutes. Fish put up one heck of a fight, will never forget that. Took the kayak out and just pulled spoons along the surface and started hitting fish in no time. Too bad about my reel as I really would have liked to land that fish. Stuck to fly fishing after that and hooked jacks and even some needle fish, fun trip overall. Will try and get some pictures up.

Flies are very worn out and these are the only ones I had left so pack plenty as the fish will just rip right through them...

wow, thanks for the pics and tips.  wbased on what you've said I'm definitely going to have to bring an extra reel down.  both for fly and spinning.

here are pics of the flies I ordered online.  hopefully there are enough that they last.

I was planning on eating some of what I catch too.  as I see you did with the mackerel. so excited for this trip.

Great results for a DIY fishing.
Just curious, what fly line did you used and did it hold up well, would you use it again or get a specific warm water fly line. I've heard that line types designed for our cold waters get soft and kind of melt in hot temperatures.

I was thinking the same before I left but then just did not bother with getting a warm water fly line. I used an old Rio Gold that I had to replace anyway so just used it and did not care if it melted. Surprisingly, the line did not change at all. Will need to replace it as it is old but if I was going down for fishing I would buy a warm water fly line and a better one to punch through the wind.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I'm 4 weeks away from my trip to Riviera Maya,Mexico. Staying 10 minutes by cab from Puerto Morales,a fishing village where I hope to rent a small boat to survey the waters. Will have a report up when I return.
