We're near the end of the coho season although there are late runs in the Chehalis and the various Fraser sloughs. Steelhead season is next up.

Coho salmon fishing should continue being strong until early December in some systems on the north side of the Fraser River. Chum salmon fishing is also still good for a couple more weeks, but finding fresher fish would be difficult of course.

Fishing happens year-round in the Lower Mainland, the season just changes. Starting in December, the season turns into a hunting game. The target species will be cutthroat trout, bull trout, rainbow trout and winter steelhead. This fishing goes on until late April. You can baitfish (where permitted), lure fish or flyfish for them. Like coho salmon, ALL wild fish of these species (with an adipose fin) are required to be released.

Cutthroat trout, bull trout and rainbow trout in the coastal streams will be highly migratory, as they will only be where the food is. The feed will change as the season goes on. from salmon eggs, to salmon flesh, to sculpins, to juvenile salmon. This means you will need to change your presentation to accommodate the shift.

Winter steelhead fishing happens in a few streams in the Lower Mainland, but Chilliwack River is again where you will find the most success out of all these systems. If you are unfamiliar with it, there is a derby coming up in mid January where many forum members are attending:

Local put&take lakes will not be stocked during the winter months, but you should still find a few fish as they are being stocked right now.

Pitt River/northern end of Pitt Lake can only be accessed by boats (extreme caution should be taken). Best alternative is to get a group together, sign up on one of Pitt River bull trout trips with experienced local guides (good fishing starts in late winter/spring).

It's public access. The boat trip is not only dependent on the size of the boat, but more the experience/knowledge of that particular piece of water. Perhaps those who travel it regularly can provide some information for you.
