Title: Learned something new: bulges in ocean’s surface
Post by: clarki on June 08, 2020, 12:49:10 PM
Watching a Nat Geo “Drain The Oceans” episode about the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.

Underwater structure (ie mountains) has a gravitational pull and draws water toward it. Using satellite radar, they detect changes in water height caused by this gravitational pull.  The radar can discern “bulges” in the water of up to 5 cm caused by underwater mountains up to a km in height.

Meaning they can map the sea floor, using minute changes in sea height, as measured by satellites in orbit.

I didn’t know that and it’s pretty cool!

Nerd out.

That is cool.
I wonder if the Bermuda Triangle has mountains. That might explain a lot.

I read that there are methane gas leaks in the area of the Bermuda Triagle. It floats to the surface and this is what causes boats to sink and planes to fall from the sky
