The only reason fish whether it be salmon or steelhead return is to SPAWN, that is their entire drive. Take away that drive and urge and they wont return

Question still remains, would they retain the same migratory instincts, even if they were infertile?

You are asking a very complicated question.

What triggers the return to the river?
Is it a hormonal/chemical reaction in the fish or is it an environmental reaction that affects all fish?

My guess is that the fish would never return to the river.

Edit: oops, didn't read the second page but we both came to the same conclusion.

Don't triploids get very large (and quickly too) because all energy goes to physical development vs sexual maturity....imagine releasing a bunch of triploids into the ocean never knowing if they would come back...seems like a very dangerous idea for an eating machine that could through an ecosystem out of whack.
