I've only fished the Cap twice and it can certainly be a dangerous place to fish with hard to navigate spots as well as conditions which can change rapidly.

It was sobering to hear this on the news this morning and my heart goes out to the friends, family of this angler as well as the witnesses to the tragedy.

No lure, fish, or sweet looking spot on the other side of the river are worth not coming home for.

That's too bad...

The one time I was truly fearful for my safety while fishing was in the Capilano canyon. It was early in BC fishing career (when my enthusiasm and good sense were not in equal measure) and I was fishing for early coho in the spring. I clambered down the canyon walls to fish the Dogleg Pool and climbed back up the canyon at a different location. Mistake #1

Half way back up I became stuck. I had tucked my fishing rod in the back of my vest, so I had both hands free to climb, and it was getting caught in foliage and preventing upward progress. And the rocks I was clinging to were mossy and slick. So there I was: not feeling I could safely go down, unable to go up, and having a tentative purchase on mossy rocks and roots. And then my limbs started shaking, and fear set in.   After a bit of maneuvering I was able to go sideways, free the rod, and continue up.

Thereafter all my fishing in the canyon was on established trails!

My wife showed me this news last night, horrible.

I've fished there several times this year. late in the summer the flow is quite calm but the amount of water moving through there lately is not to be taken lightly. On top of that the rocks are super slick in there. Can't imagine trying to cross in any of the sections I've fished even with a pfd.

It will be getting even worse few days later after bait ban removed. Imagine those "deadly" roe left over on slippery rocks. Fingers crossed.

The Capilano River got close to claiming my hide almost to the date 15 years ago.
Very strong at the time and a good swimmer, I managed to pull myself out.
That river can be nasty. Don't fish it without a PFD.
I never fished the canyon section again after that.

My heart goes out to the victim's family and friends. :(

I've been in the Cap a couple of times, once with waders, but always in slow water.  Apparently this guy tried to cross when the water was above 2 feet (about 1.3 m on the graph).  When the water is at dead low (0.6 m) it can be done in some spots but if there is any flow at all, attempting to cross is a bad mistake. 


And i really wouldn't rely on a pfd to save you if the water is high.

I thought the same, but the poster's poor English left me thinking that maybe what he really meant to say got gruesomely lost in translation.
But if I'm mistaken and he really meant to say what he did, calling him an idiot is an understatement.

This is tragic. Another fisherman was rescued couple of weeks ago when he was swept away

Wearing hip waders on any of the more popular salmon bearing rivers in BC is a tragedy waiting to happen. Those darn things can fill up with water and pull you (and keep you) under in a flash. The same holds true for chest waders worn without a wading belt tightly fastened.
