New Fraser River sockeye update
« on: September 06, 2005, 09:31:30 PM »

New update on the increasing #'s of sockeye showing up in the Fraser. Read between the lines and it looks like the commercials might get an opening. Not too sure whether the recreational sockeye fishery upstream of Mission is closing. Can anyone make sense of the report?

Subject:  FN0662-Salmon: Fraser River Sockeye Update - September 6 - Areas 11 to 29

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fraser River Panel was provided with assessments of the status of Fraser
River sockeye and pink salmon at the meeting today, Sept. 6th.  Fraser River
sockeye continue to set new records for extremely late migratory timing this
season, which has resulted in further increases in in-season run size
estimates.

The Fraser Panel approved increases to sockeye run size estimates for Early
Summer to 750,000 sockeye, Summer Run to 7 million and the Late Run component
to 512,000 sockeye.

Abundance estimates of Fraser River pink salmon are tracking slightly below the
75 percent probability level forecast of 11.7 million, although current
estimates of their run size are highly uncertain due to variability in
assumptions regarding their 50 percent migratory timing through Area 20.

Migration conditions for Fraser River sockeye and pink salmon in the Fraser
River watershed continue to be satisfactory.

Commercial

Based upon the information received today from the Fraser River Panel, the
potential for any commercial fishing opportunities targeting Fraser sockeye are
currently under review and consideration. A further update will be provided on
Wednesday, September 7 regarding the status and confirmation of any potential
opportunities
.

First Nations

First Nations targeted Fraser River sockeye fisheries in the Fraser River above
Sawmilll Creek are continuing; fisheries below Sawmill Creek are currently
closed and further opportunities are not anticipated.

Recreational

Sockeye retention fisheries in the Fraser River below Mission have closed
starting September 6.  Closures above Mission will be implemented according to
the interior coho conservation closure schedule.
Sockeye retention in marine
areas will continue in areas currently open.

The next update will be Wednesday September 7, the next Panel meeting is
currently scheduled for Friday September 9th.

I'm thinking it's over after September 7.  So - tomorrow is likely our last day to get some sox.  I'm done!  Only two trips - but 4 sox in the freezer!  Unless of course - I'm wrong - which wouldn't surprise me!

The interesting thing is that the FN will close below sawmill creek.  Is that above Hope?  If so - FN will be closed presumably to protect the Thompson coho...

Sawmill is 5 miles above Yale.
