http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/rescue/bcrescue.htmCheck out C.A.R.E. society. They bring in dogs from overseas, that are carefully screened for social and behavioral issues. A friend of mine got a "dog in a box", and couldn't be happier.
It took me a year of searching before I found my beast. We got him from the SPCA in squamish, and I must have seen at least 12 dogs before I found him. Be prepared to be disappointed once or twice, and be ready to act quick. It helps if you have dog beds, food, etc, ready to go before you bring your dog home.
I spent a year training my beast before I trusted him enough to bring him fishing, and I still pick my spots carefully. But worth all the effort in the end. Good luck..
