Sturgeon reel specs
« on: August 29, 2016, 09:18:11 AM »

Question: what do you look for in a good sturgeon reel? I know that large capacity is a given, but what about things like gear ratio, handle size/style, aftermarket modifications, or other considerations?
Thanks in advance.

I use a Penn 330, others on the boat use Penn 320 (which are a little small).

The reel doesn't have to be any thing special and you don't need a casting boss.
Drag on any decent reel should be good enough.

One of the Penn 320 has a large handle that fills your hand rather than a few fingers.
I would definitely look for this in a sturgeon reel.

Shimano TLD-20 lever drag is all I have ever used.
Cheap, great drag, 32 inches per crank retrieve rate, low maintenance.

You are better off giving a price that you want to spend..... 8)

I run Penn Internationals because I have used reels long and hard and had quite a few failures.....!

Avet makes a very nice reel too, but pricey also!!

The Penn 330 will do for most recreational Sturgeon fishers.
A bit bulky for the shore fisher but great boat reels.
Shimano TLD are even nicer for a little more money and then you get into the serious money reels as already mentioned the International,s and Avet,s.

I had 5 Penn 320,s and 4 330,s and only ever had one small issue with any of them with hard usage.
