Went under the Keith Wilson Bridge today, rather slow but a couple guys caught got some springs and my buddy landed his first wild coho. What was really interesting was the guy who pulled in a large spring doe that had weird infected looking wounds all over the body... kinda like rot. :oIf they were circular, maybe they could be lamprey bites, they are known for attaching themselves to salmon.

A few looked like lamprey wounds but a good portion of the tail had already rotted, and the large fist sized wounds on the top of the back and one on the head had me wondering what the heck... zombie fish! ;)

Prepare for a blow out - Looks like heavy rains tonight.
River might color up but the ground is so dry because of the insanely dry September it will absorb a lot of the rain so its unlikely the levels will go over 2m or so even with the heavy rain.
Could make things interesting...My guess it won't :) Fish might just be better informed than us.
Current river condition. Some are already migrating from the Fraser. :-X

Hm. What's an NPM?
River condition remained unchanged today despite of the rain.
Saw a couple coho and a few spring. Seems the river is litter with chum in comparison but hopefully the coho flood in soon..
Have you seen the gill net stats recently?! ???
In hindsight, it appeared the chum were in abundance because they jump a lot.
Chilliwack, http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/canada/british-columbia/chilliwack, - Here comes the rain. !!!!!
went out this morning between canal and vedder bridge. snagged into a huge spring in the dorsal and spent 30 min fighting the tank. caught 3 wild hatch before 11:00 and then it just shut down. is it just me or are the wilds more aggressive on the bite this year. 11 wilds and only 2 hatch so far. was using #3 colorado silver blades through out the day. its only my 3rd day on the vedder so not bad i guess.

its been bugging me how light these chinooks take are this year. you can barely notice ur float do anything that u have to start paying attention to the drift instead and real good float balance. If something is irregular or bobbing very slightly....give it a little lift and if u feel resistance, set the hook. I've lost so many roe for being so slow to react, even if its goes down a few second after when u notice something is different. you basically lost your chance as you've been stripped and pulling water. Very frustrating, especially when u keep losing every big spring in the past few trips. >:(I agree, I have to keep good tension on my diet almost to point of swinging and if I feel a "tap tap" or slightest take I set it.
...the kids as the stay away pylons.....
They need to do something. The long leaders and float flossing is getting ridiculous.

Has anyone else noticed the amount of dead springs laying in the water at the tail end of the runs where these long liners congregate?Saw 6 this morning, while picking up floats along the river. Still blanked, worse year I have ever had, heavy rain now by the way, will be good float hunting tomorrow as the river most likely will be mud.

The fish are so spooked from all the ripping going on. I see springs spawning in the river way below the hatchery does anyone know the significance of this? Are they supposed to be spawning in the river?
They have built new spawning pools along the river in some areas of the lower and mid river.
Are you referring to the gravel extraction ponds?
I think he is referring to the side channels they made along the lower river.Yes. I'm talking about those channels.
Yes. I'm talking about those channels.I don't think its over quite yet. Although the hatchery is absolutely loaded with cohos and springs. Even saw a doe steelhead up there.
BTW, is the main coho run in the system already or is it a relatively later run b/c of lack of rain? I have only seen a few hatch cohos landed this season so far. Also, the Albion test net for the last week shows 0 coho and 769 chums! Are they still feeding in the chuck and waiting for cooler water temps or rain?
Epic day on the upper river yesterday.... ;D . brought home my limit with 3 cohos and 1 white springs and lost some too. One of my best fishing days. Only thing that ruined it a bit was 2 guys on the opposite shore just snagging fish continuously with a float and bare hook ripping through the water! they probably cast 50 times per minute...ridiculous!
Did anyone say anything?
Sure a tough year for me as usually by this time I have a few coho.
Clarity was very good at 4:00pm.
I told you where you should try chris, I got 2 nice hatch bucks there today.I was just down a bit.
I would be charging a fee to fish on the reserve. Safe parking, no snagging, limited amount of people, might even have days you could reserve your favorite spot all for your self or a couple of buddies. Be happy they still let you fish there.Yup, I can see that happening soon enough Wes as Soowahlie has a young, bright and progressive Chief. Mayhaps add in safe camping ... Good post ;)
Let's encourage having to pay to go fishing that's a brilliant idea! :-\ Indians are already blocking access to hunting areas lets start on fishing now too!!

+1Huh?
Should be good tomorrow, not a lot rain forecasted today or for tonight.
Huh?
Rainfall warning in effect for:
•Fraser Valley - east including Chilliwack
Rain, at times heavy, is expected.
A frontal system has brought 46 mm of rain to Hope since last night. An additional 20 to 30 mm of rain is expected before rain eases off this evening with greater amounts near Hope.

Well one of our sources must be wrong. According to the forecast I looked at max 15mm over next 24h in Chilliwack and nice weather tomorrow:

Can anybody report on the water conditions of the Vedder this afternoon?
Looking to get out tomorrow (friday) morning first thing.
I didnt check the water levels this monday and drove to a very dirty Squamish :-[
Thanks

water was very good this am. River looked very high still.
on a side note found this video today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVT-PpVw5b0
I hope when the snaggers get shamed like this that they will stop.
Water dropped overnight and hung on all day even through all the rain this afternoon, was chum city today.
Whoever that guy is deserves to a medal and needs to keep filming and just start sending these tapes in right to the DFO And tell em to wake the hell up.Unfortunately there's nothing in that video to indicate that fish was foul-hooked other than the cameraman saying BUSTED.

Coho Salmon season in the Vedder is now over for 2014.
??? Your referring to the blown out river here I'm assuming? In the olds days we had good fishing well into December on the Chilliwack Vedder but now it starts to taper off in the first week of November, for fresh fish anyway. The good part is, the majority of long liners will have moved on then too and the chinooks they were having lots of success with are now over, of course the high water of late in the Canal helped too.

I remember fresh coho in the lower river in December ... often you were not sure at first if you had a bright coho or a small steelhead on :) But, some good news ... there is a lot of lower river off channel habitat recently created by DFO, with the goal of bringing back that late run coho component, as well as creating safe (from high water events) spawning areas for chum and pinks. The even better news is this recruitment will be wild fish, or at least as wild as Vedder coho can be ..
Maybe its just me but the last couple years I have seen more coho around later than I am used to.Years ago I got one like that in January and also 2 bright chum in the same month that I thought were steelhead too, for a few seconds especially when I saw a bright flash.
This one surprised me on January 1st this year. Was thinking steelhead until I got it in for a look. Latest I have ever caught a coho on the Vedder.

s Mind you I had the best Sept I ever had and my 1st coho this year was Sept 8th.This coming from RalphH, so much for the "good old days" BS.
LOL, what good old days BS?just how people always say the fishing were so much better in the old days...............but seriously...............it really isn't all that bad right now. Those who remember the really good days are long gone.
This coming from RalphH, so much for the "good old days" BS.sorry Ralphie, I wasn't targeting you. just people who made that comment in general.
Coho salmon fishing has been fantastic so far this year IMO. We were pretty spoiled by last season but the last few weeks have been almost just as good after a pretty slow start in September. I find it pretty enjoyable to fish it now, since most runs are void of people. Most people have gone up to Tamahi, leaving all the nice runs where you can actually trick the fish to bite.Maybe my video sent them there. ;D ;D ;D
Hi Rod
It mentions retention but shows a punched adipose fin, if these are wild fish they should not be retained.
can you elaborate?

I know Jason, Rod and Nick said education is the answer, I donot know what they are planning to do as I am sure there is just too many of them to educate but kudos to them for trying.
Saw them, UBC up river today.
River was mud but the dippers, long liners etc. where hard at work. Saw a chap at the Cement Slabs with one hooked in the side, I made sure it was released. FOC was out there today as well and I spent some time talking to him about all this type of activity and how it can be curtailed.

Ah! That make sense.
I was up at the Adams last weekend and noticed a number of the sockeye sporting unusual items such as a large yellow wire through its back. Many more had little orange discs through their back behind the dorsal fin which I assumed were some sort of tracking device - but the yellow wired one stumped me.

Just heard back. Only hatchery-marked fish were tagged in this study. I'll see if I can get them to revise the diagram in that poster.
Just out of curiosity what method did the researchers use to capture and tag these coho in Ft.Langley?

"Beach Seining" is the method shown in the picture.
What is a dipper? Sorry - I missed the meaning of this term somewhere along the way.The way they fish here. http://youtu.be/ocrNO4q1LdM?list=UU_4LtEFjHj-ulBHuoq6COmQ
What is a dipper? Sorry - I missed the meaning of this term somewhere along the way.
I'm, curious to know the definition of them too.
Also known as 'pocket flossing' where you find a soft piece of water behind some structure like a boulder (ie the pocket). Flip/dip your presentation into said pocket do a very short drift which may only be a few feet long. At the end lift your presentation out of the water and repeat ad nauseum.
Often that pocket is literally right at your feet like you see at Tamahi in the video posted by Chris. So close that you don't even need to cast or reel in between drifts. Fish will travel up the edges to avoid the heavy rapids so are easily targeted in such spots.
Pull out just enough line and dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift-dip-drift all day long. In the right pocket you can literally do hundreds of drifts per hour because they are so short AKA dipping
The main criticisms is that sections like Tamihi draw an insane number of people fishing shoulder to shoulder, the incidence of foul-hooked fish is pretty high, and because of the rapids and density of people around you, when a fish is on they often just try to haul it out of the water ASAP like bass fishing (see 1:20 mark in Chris's video above). Those who are good at it can certainly get into good numbers but many find it a mind-numbing way to fish. Not many would describe it as enjoyable...
Hmmm, that definition reminds me of creek fishing with fly - just hitting all the pocket water. I didn't realize that was frowned upon.
My interpretation of a Dipper was some thing negative, more towards the snagging side of things where someone may chose to use a large hooked object like a big spoon dipped in a pocket - drift it through the run then rip it out of the water at the end or on any bump.
Thank you - now I know what a Dipper is.

Can anyone comment on water conditions?
Graphs not working for me for some reason anyone else having problems?
Water level spiked again on the graph.
Water level spiked again on the graph. That is why I said a few days ago the coho fishing is over for this year on the Chilliwack Vedder. Also not only too much water it is in bad shape clarity wise.
Just out of curiosity what method did the researchers use to capture and tag these coho in Ft.Langley?
Is there any reasonable flyfishing water in high water conditions, assuming clarity while the water is falling this weekend?
It has been over since 9 days ago. ;DAre you trying to keep people off the river? ;D ;D ;D
Some fish and fishermen missed the memo this weekend. ;)

Was there today and conditions were great. Water was high but clear. What shocked me was usually there's a lot more dead or almost dead chum kicking around and I didn't see many. Also most spots were empty of people except for Tamahi which easily had about 30 cars ::)I agree with the lack of chum and chinook carcasses; most likely another bad year for eagles and gulls that depend on this river at this time.
What shocked me was usually there's a lot more dead or almost dead chum kicking around and I didn't see many.Washed downriver with the late high water ?
Washed downriver with the late high water ?
Few weeks back saw some people with pitch fork like sticks taking the carcasses out of the water and placing them on the shores. Definitely speeds up the decaying process and likely helps the vegetation. I believe they were volunteers or hired by some environmental agency. If you saw these people on the Vedder they were a DFO enumeration crew.
Out today for a few casts after a duck hunt but no action saw one small fish being carried, great conditions it must be over now Rod. ;D ;D ;D
Possibly! ;D Another one didn't get the memo this morning. ;DTime to try and catch them float fishing. ;D :D I was out out for a bit before I went to the Remembrance service but the float stayed dry once again. The howling wind did not help matters. Was great to see a large attendance at the cenotaph as Canadians remember.

Water level is dropping a bit faster now due to the cold weather, but it's still a bit high. By the end of this week there should be more fishable runs.
Chris. To windy right now to hunt and too fish too. Its a hurricane out there now.
The duck hunting should be good with the cold weather. Time to walk the creeks and jump a few northeners.
Got any good corn fields?
Fished for 45 minutes out of the wind this morning but it was steelhead cold with guides icing up. Managed a fresh run chum.
I am totally new to all this. Tried going to the Vedder in October but it was all rained out, then I had to go out of town. Is there any point in trying again up there? I will go tomorrow if there is.
Is there any point in trying again up there? I will go tomorrow if there is.I think it's worth it, but you'll need to look for fish.
How is the river holding up with this rain? I see the level seems to be holding ok. Weather network says there is mucho wind in the valley. Any word on clarity? It will be a while before the river will be fishable, running high and muddy when I looked this AM
