Salmon Heads

Are you required to keep salmon heads after cleaning a fish at your fishing destination? Someone mentioned this to me, and it would make sense if an officer was identifying your catch.

Just wondering as I usually toss the heads after cleaning.

To me it seems that an officer should be able to identify species without a head and tail. But whatever, laws are laws.

Considering the head remaining attached is so the officer can determine size and not species...

I think in fresh water the heads need to remain on, in salt you can remove heads but what is left needs to measure more then the minimum.

I agree - measurement would be the only practical reason.

I've had them next to my boat identifying fish in my cooler using flip charts with pictures of tails and mouths. I had 2 pinks a hatchery coho and a spring. They were sure I had undersized springs, then they said I had wild coho.
I honestly thought they were joking.
Most of these clowns learn from books and don't have any fishing experience.
