Headed out to the chehalis at first light as usual, even though with the rain I knew better. What's a guy to do when he has the day off and has the fever?Coho that is. I will get to the rivers in a moment .First let me relay a persnal tragedy that befell me on the way.Maybe it can serve as a heads up to others by sharing it.Here's the scenario, approaching turn off to nicomen island misses turn and t-bones innocent older gent who is just minding own business out for a coffee with his buddy. In the rain and glare I didn't recognize the turn I thought it was a side road and too late realized it was a turn in the road!Ouch! Luckily no-one was hurt But the old gents minivan is totaled.I just had minor damage to my pick-up.One half second later I may have struck the drivers side not just the front. This thought does not give me comfort. Please just be careful out there.
Anyway the chehalis is currently blown out.Acouple of days I guess before it clears and drops enough for coho fishing.Suicide Creek the same but worse, seems the steeper run produced heavier rainfall. The vedder is blown out top to bottom but I did see some guys at the hatchery catching some dark fish and some tomatoes. No doubt there are fish in the side channels and that is where they will likely stay until the river drops and clears somewhat.
Good Luck and be careful on and away from the water.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Riverman. That road to Chehalis can be dangerous in the rain. But I guess any
road can be and your words of caution should definitely be heeded. Thanks for the reports on all 3 of those locales, I'm certain you've saved a few fisherman a wasted drive. Thanks Riverman.

Fished the Chehalis Canyon on Saturday and got nothing but dogs. I had good reports from the last week of Oct., but saturday sucked ( for fish). Still a good day though, clean air, nice river, great freind, and no phone service ;D
-
fished the bible run with 40 other fisherman, fished from 7:30 till 11:30 all i seen hooked were chum.
-
I forgot to say this was last sunday. lots of people no cohos caught that i could see.
-
Sounds like the same story everywhere. Here's some pics of the chocolate milk that is my local flow.
-
Was at the Stave - Water was good clarity My partner got one wild Ho and another fellow also got 1 wild from shore. Guy in boat comes in with his partner and they have thier limit -Ho,s and chum. Move to the slough-Up and Dirty Went back to the Stave and played the chum on the flys
-
Hey Riverman, did the chehalis campground blow out as well ? I'm going camping there this weekend ! I guess if I see chum booting across the road like a few years back , that will tell me what the shape of things will be lol . ?
-
Went back to my same spot pictured above. Unfortunatley the water was still just as high, however, the visibuility was much better at about 1 ft. Fished for about a hour and got 3 coho, 1 rainbow and one cutty. One coho and the rainbow were taken on a dicknite spoon. The cutty was caught on a jensen egg. And the other two coho were caught on size 2 blue foxes, one pink one red. Here's some pics. Enjoy.

God score Biff.......nice pics. Thanks for sharing.

Secret :-X

Went out to the chehailis today. Did pretty good on colorado's, kept two hatcheries, released two wilds and released two tomatoes. Funny thing, one of the coho still had a fly inside it's mouth from a previous encounter with an angler. As well, there was the usual mixed bag of boot chums and a few nasty springs. Here's a few pics. Enjoy.

It looks like your making the most of the fall fishing season . Nice pics keep it up
-
It looks like that coho in the pic should have gotten away twice
-
Nice fish
-
Good going, but isn't that a blue fox rather than a spinner? Sneaky.
-
I agree. I think that coho should be still swimming.

A blue fox is a spinner...
I agree. I think that coho should be still swimming.
Why?

Beauty ! Nice fish BC keep on fishin brother. Water looks good too.

I wouln't talk there flyguy44 , seems he is doin better than you or I have this year lol ! ;D
-
Question..??? Do you use those spinners and spoons under a float Biffchan? Anybody else can answer this? Thanks guys. Plan to head out this weekend. Tight lines 8).
-
Blue fox spinners arent good under a float drifted, they are realatively heavy and dont flutter under a float like a swivel spinners (AKA colarado blade). At $3-5 each I dont want them bouncing in the rocks under a float too! I am 99.5% sure Biff was casting them with out a float.
And to the guys bitchin that the fish was snagged...chill out. Yes the pic shows and outside - in hook set but with a spinner being the fishing method I am confident that fish bit but just happened to get the hook right in the old beek! If it were a tuft of wool in a fast seem different story....probably snagged. Its just like when a steelhead pics up a pink worm and get the hook outside in on the jaw line or in the scissors...either way the fish TOOK the presentation hence not a snag job.
-
CANYON ? BIFFCHAN ?
-
Thanks Gooey :). Much appreciated. Good luck if you're heading out this weekend.

Oh thats what the fuss is about. The same thing happens with spoons too for the same reasons.
-
"foul hook" means to hook a fish in any part of its body other than the mouth.
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/f-14/sor-96-137/121368.html
This is taken from the above web site. The hook apears to be in its' mouth. From the outside in yes, but in its' mouth. I don't think a court of law will settle this one. At least it wasn't the dorsal fin or the stomach.
-
Coho, among other fish, are known to swim after your lure and strike it downstream from where they were holding. The fish may have bitten the body, with the hook trailing outside its mouth, then once the take was felt, the strike was made thrusting the hook in from the outside. I've seen hooks outside with spinners, spoons, flies, roe. Especially with a longer bodied presentation, such as a spoon where the body is long and the hook(siwash) is long. The fish didn't bite the hook, it bit the spinner. There just happened to be a hook at the end of it.
Nice fish BC.
-
Wow, never mend to stir the pot but since I have :P
Your right BP, that is a blue fox in it's mouth. Unfortunatly it was the only one I had with me and shortly after that fish I snagged it. The rest of the time I was fishing colorado's under a float.
-
Thanks for info Biffchan. You are one lucky bugger ;). I'm so jealous ;D ;D.

Nice report biff...dont mind what other "nobs" are saying, if you want to post a map leading us all right to the spot...fly at 'er!
And "coffeegrinder" (a tool commonly implemented by beaks ;) ), lets keep this friendly, referring to Biff as "KID" is a little derogitory don't you think? His posts seem to present him as a knowledgable and accomplished fisherMAN!

He was fishing in the CHEHALIS RIVER!! Just like it said in his post ::)
Nice fish by the way BC.
-
I was only being derogitory towords the comment from Captian Hook when I asked BC where he was fishing in those pics . No beaking off , just didn't want a responce from someone that had anything to do with my question to Biff C . Sorry ;)
-
I was also reffering to the first sets of pictures on page one. Oh , and my mistake on the last post. It was Captian Bonk , not Captian Hook . Sorry ;D
-
I never accused Biffchan of intentionally snagging fish accidents happen But in my opinion that fish should have been released. Another opinion I have is that if Gooey can't have an intelligent debate about fishing topics then he is a NOB
-
well, my input is > nice pictures, I enjoyed looking at them. thank you
-
Good job biffchan on your outings ;)
For those fisher that are curious on how salmon attacks a lure, they should check out Charlie White's underwater footage on salmon fishing that was released about 15 years ago. Hopefully the video will show why the hook are sometime on the outside. Funny thing happen to me while trolling at Porlier Pass sometime ago where I hooked a spring on the tail. I wondered how this can be possible since I was trolling in a large body of water. Sure made the day for the seal that grabbed this salmon. :o
-
hey Bc one quick question how long was your leader to your coloardo?? ???
Thanks DTM
-
Always 2 feet or less for any type of float fishing.
-
Biffchan Take no offence to my comment as none was intended . I do enjoy your posts and pictures
-
Hey flyguy...I defended Biff's action and explained why I would have no problem retaining that fish either.
You want to have an intelegent dialog...then have one. Don't throw out a comment like "looks like that fish should have got away twice ", you basically were implying that he kept a snagged fish which you PERSONALLY thought should have been released.
You never substantiated or justified your position though, just imposed your beliefs on another person.
And then you actually REPEAT your mistake in your last post: "I never accused Biffchan of intentionally snagging fish accidents happen". Your still implying that he kept a snagged fish!
You say he wasnt intentionally snagging fish...accidents happen. Thats where I think you are absolutely wrong. That fish hit the lure and happened to get the hook outside on the beak. IMHO a snagged fish has not hit the lure, rather the lure hit the fish. I am sure Biffs fish HIT the lure and thats good enough for me!
-
I meant blue fox rather than a colorado blade. Goofed.
-
Wow, never mend to stir the pot but since I have :P
Biff, you're such a trouble stirrer.... ;D
I'm still tired from today's outing, so the entire thread still doesn't make a lot of sense after reading it.
Anyways, it's Friday night, give each other a hug. :P
-
Gooey all that I am saying is that I would have released that fish . You defended Biff by calling anybody who disagreed with his decision to retain that fish a NOB. Where exactly is that word located in the synopsis

"Nob" is in there between "beek" and "flosser". Go take a look, its right there, and hard to miss ;)
-
it's a clean hook. why do you think they always say, not to forget to 'set the hook' when a fish strikes? fish always hits the presentation and if it doesn't like the taste, it'll spit it out....common sense tells you, the fish took the spinner from the 'top side down'.
