so what's in your steelhead vest?
« on: November 10, 2005, 02:12:23 AM »

switching my vest pockets from coho to steelhead and I go from having a few spools of leader , some wool, 3 sizes of hook (#4,2 and 1) swivels, pencil lead and tubing, floats, colorados and french/bluefox blades and of course a bait box of roe in the fridge.

I pull out my steelhead gear and it goes something like this
hooks #4,2,1,1/0
leader Pline Cfx 8#,10 and 12
swivels with duolock snaps for quick leader changes
small medium and large split shot
quick change balsa floats for fast, moderate and slow conditions
3 sizes of drennan floats
2 wool containers ( 16 colors)
3 sizes, 2 colors of gooey bobs
2 sizes, 6 colors rubber worms
2 sizes 2 colors jensen eggs
anise oil scent
ghost shrimp scent
prawn scent
french blades
colorado blades
K2 and K3 wobblers
gibbs ironheads in 2 sizes, 3 color finishes
small corkies and spin n glos
lead head jigs in an assortment of pinks and oranges
aero flies in an assortment of pinks , reds ,oranges and blacks
box of steelhead flies for the 9wt
2 jars differnt size and color of water hardened egg sacks
bait box for ghost shrimp
bait box for roe

do you think I've got a problem???
especially when i pack 3 rods, sage 3106 mb for the float, shimano clarus xfast 9ft for spoons and the loomis 9wt for the hope of a steelhead on the fly.

so , who's as nuts as me...... what's in your gear bag for steelies?

sounds a tad overkill to me...but I have a bad bak soooo...in my vest...I bring my pin and I have 2 spare spools for one fly rod...one box of flies(bout50).....one siz of hooks for steelies(Mustad Lazer sharp #16)...mebbe 4 floats...headlamp for late returns...spare key for truck (have locked my keys in truck more than once)...one size of splitshot(need more weight add more shot) a couple zingers with the usual tools applied(lanyard on the way this winter)...a couple pieces of different colored sponge(white/orange/red/peach/chartruse)....no natural bait...stuff stinks...and the fish see this stuff alll the time...I believe something a lil' different oft times makes your day.....never use plated hooks...they will infect a fish as they will not rot...bronze hooks will rot out in a couple days...for those LL releases....never carry a net...am gonna add a wading staff before I head out....and of course my bowl and stash...never leave home without it ;D....thats about it folks....a boring effecient kit...;))))

Does anyone else prefer split shots to pencil lead or am I the only one?

I am a split shot guy. I never use pencil lead for anything.

As for whats in my vest, well my vest if still full of salmon gear  :P

Actually I dont have everything ready. I noticed today that I am out of white wool so next week I will take inventory and see what I need to stock up on.

I use pencil lead for salmon generally but when the steelies come I use the split shots. Does anyone use the re-usable ones?

I try to only use the re-usable ones but if I run out I always have the other ones on hand. I dont like the ones you cant re-use, kind of a waste.

I prefer split shots when I'm float fishing with bait, otherwise it's pencil lead.

i use split shot exclusively for steelhead. I don't like the reusables with the little wings, they just tangle more frequently, i use the regular round ones and save them when i am done with them or re rigging. i then make slinky weights for salmon fishing.

actually if you throw the splits in a pocket when you're done with 'em you can pry 'em back open with a knife pretty easily and re-use them ;)

try rocking your finger nail in the split..u kin then reuse it right there on the river.....works for me....;))

Vest?? Whats that??  :D

I carry a small back-pack when chasing steel. In it is the usual arsenal one would expect to find for that pursuit, spare spool of line, jensen's worms and a handfull of spin-n-glos, hooks, leader materiel, a handfull of floats, pliers, sissors, knife and a camera (which gets employed FAR more often than the knife  ;)) Of course, the ever present flask of Appleton's (both for warmpth as much as celebration upon success). ~ 1/2 a coil of pencil lead, and a box of the non-reuseable split shot. I use the latter nearly exclusively, as short-floating is my preferred method of choice. I tend to keep the contents of the pack to a minimum, so I can work the flow with it on my back without noticing the weight. Caters to my usual mode of attack of hit and run  ;) And is quite convenient on the rare occasion I bonk one for the table, and have to extract from some far-flung location.

That's what works best for me, of course, Your mileage may vary...  ;D

Cheers,
Nog

split shot without wings can be reused by pinching (with pliers) the back of the split shot on the sides where the slits are that crimp the line.  When you put the split shot on your line don't over tighten.  they'll be easier to remove and will pull out of snags easier.
