Sometimes we fisherman need to look UP to enjoy the world too :)

I really like #7 & #8! What lens are you using?
-

Canon 100-400 on a 7D. Those two (at least) were shot with a circ polarizer.
-
always love the owl shots, are the snowys still attracting overzealous crowds of photogs?
those eagle pics are suitable for framing lol
saw some young baldies in the Pitt Polder yesterday but no pics like that, my camera is too small for good pics and hers is too big to carry for her lol
we did see the smallest bird of prey Ive seen, the size at most of a robin, cool to see
-
Great Pics as per usual DS. Everytime I see your photos, I want to upgrade my camera to something better and then it'll be like fishing... practice and experiment! :D

That small raptor was probably a Kestrel.
David and Lead... A big camera is no use, if you're not going to lug it around with you. I HAVE seen some exceptional photos taken by some of the prosumer super-zooms.

Not necessarily big - just able to take a picture faster - and better zoom. Do you use tripod for some of your shots or are you bracing your camera with your elbow against your chest?

Most of my shots are handheld. For the owls, I was trying a 2x extender which meant that I had to manual focus. For those I used my tripod. Hard to chase birds in flight when your camera is stuck to 3 long legs ;)
-
So your Using mono then?
-
Where did you got the shot of that Eagle I usually go to Crecent Beach I spot one can get close even 100 meter s from them they easily got spook

I just drove around Delta a bit between Boundary Bay and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary... came across probably 5-6 pairs hanging out. Not all were in good angles for shots, but no shortage of them :)
-
4 hour hike up and down Burke mnt, saw no wildlife save for dogs.
saw this bird 3 min from home lol

A quick smattering of pictures from camping this past weekend in Manning Park. We actually got to WATCH ice-off. There was only about a 10 foot stretch of visible water when we got there, and by the time we left most of lone duck bay was ice free. Three new birds for me this weekend
Townsend's Warbler (not a GREAT shot, but as a first - I was pretty happy)
Red-breaste Sapsucker

Great videos.
I can't seem to get anything other than house sparrows, white crowns and red wings at my feeders. I miss my house in Kelowna.
Can't wait to get out of this condo and back into a house...

Day 5 of our time on the Galapagos brought us to Isla Fernandina and the west coast of Isabela. The snorkeling was amazing (turtles, turtles, turtles!!) and it was our only chance to see a Galapagos Hawk.
Here are the birds of the day:

Our cruise through the Galapagos was 8D7N and took us to many interesting places. For sheer volume of birds, Genovesa was amazing with the breeding red-footed boobies and nazca boobies as well as Frigatebird colony and swallow-tail gulls.
I understand that some of the southern islands, if you time it right, you get to see the waved albatross, but we had to make SOME compromises. An amazing insight into this little group of volcanic islands that grew up away from the rest of us.
I hope you've all enjoyed the various photos I posted over the past month of the incredible birds on these islands.

Educational and gorgeous posts! plus I love the word Frigate lol

I'm glad you've enjoyed them!

I'd say the shrike is the best of the set. Nice capture. Pretty sharp too.

It's because it was right beside the car, lol. All the others were needing maximum zoom on a point and shoot, across marsh.
There were a couple more Shrikes doing their thing in the area. One was in an outright dog fight with a large dragon fly.

Really nice heron pics Dennisk
Dragonspeed some of those pics are as good as it gets.
I like also seeing birds Ive not seen before, and how great composure and camera work can look.
cheers

Thanks Lead!
Dennis, the Heron landing shot is cool. I really like the colour version. What made you decide to go with a B/W? I find the bird gets lost in the background in the B/W.
Keep 'em coming only two more months left in 2012 :)

Awesome heron Brian, wow.
The b/w was being sort of artsy/metaphoric....my thinking was that it made the heron more part of the natural surroundings like rocks....sort of what evolution wanted in the first place...to offer the heron the ability to blend in..almost invisible...the b/w achieves that cryptic thinking of mine lol

Birds of Prek Toal Sanctuary, Cambodia
We took a birding trip that also included a visit to the floating village of Prek Toal. The village was cool, but some of the birds that we saw were brand new ones for me! The noisy boat was a drag, but we DID manage to get close enough for a FEW decent shots.
