Title: Invasive Asian Carp - Just what we needed?
Post by: Morty on August 26, 2012, 09:28:56 PM
We've all seen the videos, and many of us are aware of the challenge that the US is having getting these invaders out of the Illinois RIver...

Well, it appears they're here now !!

No, they are not silver carp, but common carp.

When I lived near and fished in the Snake river in SE Washington, the carp were frustrating.  They get really big (compared to the smallmouth bass I would fish for) but they were next to impossible to catch.  They were, however, very popular with the bow-fishers.  I don't know if the Fraser ever runs clear enough to make this practical, but in the Snake river they use high platforms on a boat to shoot the fish from above, and slaughter as many as they can.  Not that it ever seems to make a dent in the population.  This was of course in a reservoir - the Snake river at this point is a series of lakes.

Nothing worse than irresponsible reporting.

"Asian Carp invasion".

" missing salmon"

" no salmon fishing this season", often heard when Sockeye are closed.

I don;t know why the media blows everything up... That carp probably got washed there from the flood.

It's funny the headline is

Invasive carp could threaten B.C. salmon

And the last sentence of the article is

Although the fish may not be the invasive silver carp, its presence so far up the Fraser River remains a concern and potential threat for salmon.

Thanks Rodney !

I was hoping you'd add some scientific insight to the situation.

I don't think this is the same carp as the one in the Mississippi.
Also Carp like slow water and Fraser and tribs are too fast for them to really take over.
That's not to say that I wouldn't shoot the person who put any carp into the Fraser.

Common carp have been in bc since sometime in the 1800s. They were brought here by the Europeans who used them as a food source.

Maybe the media inaccuracies are whiplash from the snakehead episode earlier this year.  The impact common carp can have on native fish is largely determined by the size of the water they're in.  They're going to go wherever water is, just like any other fish, and if they get into little lakes or ponds via tributaries then I suppose they'll be competing for some of the naturals and eating some eggs and fry, again just like any other fish.  Two years of flooding in Saskatchewan and they've found common carp farther north than ever before so the province has a tv ad urging people to report any invasive species, featuring a pic of a dead common, with no real information, but implying how terrible they are.  The stupid p***ks even spent my tax money producing it.  What keeps carp numbers in check are food fishers and pelicans.  Oh, and floods like we had - the pelicans and foxes and coyotes had a buffet all summer with carp and buffalo fish stranded in the fields.

Should we go on carp killing spree? If there not native to bc why don't they recommend we kill every one we catch.

Carp are slightly beneficial. They take care of the algae blooms by literally eating them all. If all the carp are gone, the algae blooms will be hard to take care of. They are the weed control in the water.

Algae blooms although a pain in the a** to us anglers, are an important part of the "turnover" cycle for lakes that freeze up in the winter. The warm water with all the decomposed plant material at the bottom blends with the clean oxygenated water on top, setting the lake up for the bug life for the following season. So don't hate on the weeds it's feeding your quarry.

We have lakes here that still get bad algae even though there are good carp populations, and even though carp and gobies eat zebra mussels there are still zebra mussels in the Great Lakes.  The ecology of the lakes and rivers is complex, and man-made structures play a part as well.  We're seeing a new demographic in immigrants who target carp (though some of the Slavs in Sask have been coming here for 15 years), and some of them are hauling away some huge fish.  Most of the recipes I've seen are for 4 - 6 lb'rs but they obviously know what to do with a 20.  The way I look at it, the carp are here to stay, and those guys are here to stay too.  But bowhunters, don't even kid yourselves, you are not making an appreciable difference in the population.  If you have to go out and kill something just because... make sure you have someone lined up who'll cook and eat it.  I read food's going to go up....
