Hi guys, two questions.  1)  I want to smoke some salmon but I still have a bear in the area.  Has anyone smoked a salmon when there's bears around and did you have any problems?

2) How do you guys keep your straight through floats at your set heights?  I knoted a small piece of monofiment on my line but I think it might have damaged my mainline as I broke off just below the knot twice when I snagged a tree branch.

1-A noisy dog is best but most Bears don't like the smell anyway.

2-A toothpick-well actually the sharp end of a toothpick jammed into the top of the float and trimmed off close with fingernail clippers-which is what I use to cut line anyway.

The uni-knot bobber stoppers and those little gizmos stores sell to stop the float moving are either useless or as you say damage the line.

precut 1/2  inch off  toothpicks at home and stuff em in the end it works fine for me

A hungry bear can do a world of damage to a smoker. Better to play it safe.

Solution:

Shoot the bear and smoke it with the salmon

Use bobber stops to keep the float at the right length.
You can find them at any tackle shop.
Small egg shaped rubber balls.
