Title: favorite reel and rod for HO's
Post by: scruffy on September 06, 2006, 12:18:43 PM
just wanted to see what people like to use for the coho season as i use a trophy 10'6" light action rod rated 8-17lbs with a 5500 rocket 12lbs main and pending on water conditions anywhere from 6lbs-10lbs leader, mono of course.

nice setup scruffy 8)

I have two setups, one medium weight 7.5ft spinning rod with 8lb test that I throw spoons with, and also my 10.5ft 8wt flyrod with both a slow sink clear line and a floating line.  Slow sink I use a short 4ft 8lb test tapered leader, the floating line I use a slightly longer leader, maybe 8ft, 8lb tapered.  No flourocarbon!  Muddlers and mickey finns mostly on my flyline, smaller sizes for coho that have been holding a while.

ever since i modified my 6500 rocket Ive never looked back, loved it so much i had a 5500 rocket built for me all modded out, don't get me wrong i still use my shimano Calcutta's that are also modded out but it just seem's everyone has one ,trying to have a different look is what I'm after :) where's during sox's no one had a chrome rocket other than one buddy and i 'm 100% for sure one one will have a 5500 rocket with the new record colour side plates  :). as i've just switched over from the royal blue to the lighter record blue.

I saw that reel at Highwater tackle a while back.. it is an old design but a goodie, I noticed that it was exeptionally heavy compared to the newer mods, felt nice and smooth though

yes I've seen them at highwater tackle and their very nice :) ,the difference between those one's and mine are those are pro rockets and mine are the cs rockets which are only available in Sweden the side plates that are on mine are thicker and chrome  otherwise they're the same inside.

I have been looking for a replacment for my old shimano bantam50 levelwind .

Rod of choice is a Berkley Canadian Specialist ,10'6", Med.action ,Trigger Finger

Needless to say , my setup is older for sure , but I really like the feel of that rod . But the reel is on its last casts .

Oh yes , Always using Maxima Ultra green , 15lb main line , with a 6-10lb leader ( various lengths )

James you are right about that rod !!  I have the exact same model and I love it, I have brought in 35 + pound springs with no prob and it is still sensitive enough to fish coho... for the price it is probably one of the best rod's out there !!!

starting with my Winston b11x 6wt. and clear intermiadiate sink and dry line, reel, islander ir-4...when the hogs start to show i'll switch over to the sage xp 9wt, Rio versa tips will keep me in whatever water I find, reel is an Abel super 8..Now that i got some roe for roe sacks Ill take out the sage ct 2106 and calcutta TE when the wind gets up...AND..i'm debating on trying to do more jig fishing this year...I think that might be the way to go with roe sacks and bugs too...

Sometimes having too many choices is the hardest choice!! ???

Centrepin - Sage 2106b (Custom Built) with a Milner Talisman.

Baitcaster - Sage 2106b (Custom Built) with a Calcutta TE 300.

Both have 12 lb Maxima Ultragreen as main line.

I use 6 lb and 8lb leaders for the North Shore rivers (Maxima, of course).

Hey Cohokid - You are very welcome! Use often, and with good health.

Hey Rick & Roe Kid - Thanks. It took a long time for me to get those setups. Better equipment does not mean more fish, though. :-[ - BTW Rick, has Big Steel (Dave) used his new Sage yet?

My "starting lineup":

- Fly:  Sage XP 796 rod and Hardy Ultralight Disk Large Arbor 7/8 reel - looks sweet and feels sweeter!  Perfect for coho, pinks and steelies!

- Gear:  G Loomis GL2 1264 C (8 - 12 lb) rod that I intend on using with a new Abu Garcia 5500 C3 spooled up with 12 lb. Maxima Ultragreen.

My back-up rods:

- Fly:  Sage RPL+ 896 rod and Hardy Ultralight Disk 8/9 Reel (still very nice - good for springs and chum).

- Gear:  Trophy XL 10.5 foot rod (8 - 17 lb.) and Abu Garcia 6500 C3 - got a good workout on the sockeye!
