Title: Injured by fish
Post by: Flytech on October 22, 2014, 08:38:37 PM
I stopped for an hour of chum arm workout at the Stave the ther day. A large chum must have been swimming down river at full speed, and he ran in to my leg. Now standing in the river you tend to have a locked position holding you there in the current. With the force of the fish, I now have an injured knee. It's more of a re-injury from a long time ago. I couldn't believe it hurt so bad I let out a Yelp.

Anyone else have this happen to them enough to hurt? I've been bumped before, but never like this.

LOL

Yup my son got knocked off his feet when I hooked a big male humpy and it took off and straight into the back of his leg.  Not injured but he suffered a loss of dignity.

I have lost a disproportional amount of my blood to chums, trying to take the hooks out.  I think Darwin was wrong, I never seem to learn.

On Tuesday I got nudged by a chum in knee deep water, felt like my cat when he rubs up against me and all I did was look down at it and say "Hey bud, upper river is that way." and watched it divert back into the faster current.

I've heard of people getting injured by fish jumping out of the water or being attacked. I guess it's luck of the draw.  :-\

The only injury I have witnessed was many years ago a buddy grabbed a Catfish and got spiked by it.
He was in a lot of pain and went to the clinic but I cant remember if they did anything for him.

some time in the early 90's me and my younger brother were fishing for trout on some redds on hirch creek.   as we crossed knee deep water a large chum charged and bit my brother in the back of the ankle...... he was probably 10-12 at the time and it drew blood.

Chum bites your hand when trying to remove hook - instant infection.
They're like Komodo Dragons.

If only there was a tool to make hook removal from fish with teeth safer!

Oh wait they're called forceps...

You've never had a fish thrash just as you were pulling the hook?

Haven't really got injured by a live fish but I have gotten spiked by a dead lingcod once. This happened while I was cleaning the fish. I didn't realize the fish had spiny gill rakers so I got cut while trying to pull out the gills.

I have had a few fish run into me in the river but never gotten more than a bruse.  Only real injury is cut up fingers from sharp fish teeth.   If I fish more than a couple days in a row for salmon my hands get beat up good.

Can't say I have had any recent injuries.
One time I got smacked in the back of a leg by the spine of dog fish (the shark) because we were trolling herring strips. Never again.

EVER.

Once got a nasty infected cut on my hand from a large bullhead.

Earlier in my cutthroat beach fishing career, I used to chuck the bullhead by-catch on the shore behind me.

On this particular occasion, as I was chucking this bullhead, he twisted around as he was leaving my hand and raked his sharp gill plate across my hand and cut me quite badly.

Served me right...

Back in the late 80's a friend of mine had a rock cod spike him right though the top of his yellow yacht boot. By the time he got to the hospital his foot was like a balloon.
I have being spiked by a couple of rock cod over the years. You pierce the eye of the cod and squeeze the liquid on the area of penetration. It seems to help the pain go away faster.
Looking for mushrooms in the Salmon river valley I was fording the river when I was nearly bowled over by a 40-50lb. spring. What a rush. That was the best part for found very few mushrooms in the area.
Now you find very little timber for they are logging in that valley now like there is no tomorrow. Do they know some thing we don't?
